Our Lady of Mercy is the patron of penitentiary institutions, whose feast the Church celebrates on September 24.

During these days, the prisoners of the Murcia I (Sangonera La Verde) and Murcia II (Campos del Río) prisons carry out activities in honor of the Virgen de la Merced, such as theatrical performances, workshops, music or sports championships.

Last Saturday, the image of the Virgen de la Merced first came out in procession through the main street of the Murcia I Penitentiary Center, a procession in which more than one hundred inmates of this prison participated, accompanied by chaplains and volunteers from the Prison Pastoral and center officials.

After the procession, they celebrated the Eucharist.

Josefa Vera, sister of Christ Crucified and responsible for the volunteers of the Penitentiary Ministry of this center, ensures that the procession took place “between applause, prayers, songs and baths of flower petals in the image�, making stops on the different altars that the Inmates prepared.

Despite her current condition, "they enjoyed this day complimenting the Virgin and some cried with emotion to see her enter the chapel again," says the religious.

Chaplains and Penitentiary Pastoral volunteers accompany the inmates throughout the year “so that their hearts spring from yearning for encounters with the Lord and feel the freedom of the children of God,� says Sister Josefa.
