Huermur points out that the Barrera main ditch has suffered serious landslides in the section of the Molino del Rey and the historic aqueduct of the Torres Canal, which is cataloged for its cultural relevance under the Patrimony law.
The conservation entity denounces that since 2016 requesting the restoration and maintenance of the quijeros of this main section of the millenary ditch, but without obtaining an answer or adequate solutions from the Board of Landowners, the City Council of Murcia, and the Regional Government.
The fall of walls and quijeros in the middle of the channel, can impede future irrigation and the functionality of the ditch, on which thousands of orchards and irrigators of the territory depend.
In addition, Huermur notes that the parallel route to the ditch has also suffered aggravation due to several landslides, leaving the quitamiedos and parts of the road without any support.
Huermur asks that aid and actions to repair the traditional irrigation network of the Murcia orchard damaged at numerous points after the heavy rains of last week are not delayed, and that future repairs be consistent with the PGOU, in a respectful way with the history of the ditches, and coordinated by all competent administrations.
Murcia, September 18, 2019
The Association for the Conservation of the Huerta and the Patrimony of Murcia (Huermur), which has crossed the channels of the major ditches of the orchard of Murcia after the storm last week, has detected that the main ditch of Barreras has suffered serious Landslides on the stretch of Molino del Rey and the historic aqueduct of the Torres Canal.
An aqueduct, they point out, is cataloged for its cultural relevance along with several sections of this traditional irrigation channel in the village of Aljucer.
Huermur denounces the lack of care and maintenance for years of the main barrier of Barreras, one of the two main irrigation channels of the Huerta de Murcia, which has led to suffer new and serious landslides, as the entity has been able to verify in a technical visit to this ancient ditch of the south-west part of the Hydraulic network of the garden.
Another area that has a high state of landslides, is the section around the Molino del Rey with land in the districts of San Ginés, Era Alta and Aljucer, which has also suffered serious landslides, which add to the numerous damages that Since 2016 Huermur has been denouncing.
The conservation group recalls that no restoration or protection action has been done for years on the banks of this ditch, despite its serious condition, with the sole exception of the withdrawal of illegal tubing in the aqueduct itself after repeated complaints of Huermur.
Huermur indicates that the fall of walls, quijeros and rubble in the middle of the channel, can impede future irrigation and the functionality of the ditch, harming thousands of irrigators and orchards that depend on this infrastructure.
In addition, the entity notes that the parallel service route to the ditch has also suffered aggravation due to several landslides, leaving the quitamiedos and parts of the road without any subjection and literally in the air.
The entity asks that the aid and actions of the administrations to repair the traditional irrigation network of the garden of Murcia that has been damaged in numerous points after the heavy rains of last week, as well as future repairs and actions are not delayed that are carried out are in accordance with the General Urban Planning Plan of Murcia.
And also, following the recent and accurate criteria of the Office of Huerta of the Department of Urban Planning of the City of Murcia, which indicates that repairs and actions undertaken in the ditches and channels should be respectful of the environment, in a traditional way avoiding the use of reinforced concrete, and maintaining the associated vegetation of the channel without waterproofing it.
Finally, Huermur also asks that the areas of servitude of the ditches, chance and irrigation channels of the garden of Murcia be respected, and that they are fixed in the Ordinances and Customs of the Huerta de Murcia, since its liberation is essential for a adequate maintenance, cleaning and operation of the traditional irrigation network.
