The City Council sets up the Fuensanta Sanctuary with the construction of a new 1,000m2 viewpoint (26/08/2019)

During July and August, a new lookout-boulevard has been enabled that offers a panoramic view of Murcia and can also be used as a promenade area.

New banks and drinking fountains for tourists, pilgrims and visitors have also been installed in the central zone of the new green zone.

The performances value this emblematic environment for the Pilgrimage and the next descent from the Virgen de la Fuensanta to the city, which will be held on September 5.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, accompanied by the bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca Planes and the Deputy Mayor for Urban Development, José Guillén, visited today the surroundings of the Fuensanta, which this summer opens a new viewpoint with spacious views of Murcia, of about 1,000 square meters, improving accessibility to this emblematic environment and making it ready for the next descent of the Patroness and Pilgrimage of the September Fair.

"Our commitment is to protect and maintain in perfect condition one of our main tourist enclaves, the Sanctuary of the patron saint of Murcia, the Virgin of Fuensanta, whose descent to the city will take place on September 5," said the mayor, who He added that “the Baroque-style temple is one of the most emblematic places in Murcia, an area with a deep-rooted religious dedication that has lasted for centuries, where important landmarks such as the Verdolay Iberian Sanctuary, the Paleochristian Basilica of Algezares and the convent of Santa Catalina del Monte ”.

A new and wide 'lookout-boulevard' of 940 square meters

During July and August, the paving of an area of ​​940 square meters was carried out, enabling a new lookout-boulevard with wide views of Murcia that can also be used as a walking area for tourists, pilgrims and visitors.

This new green infrastructure is located next to the central garden, which was already remodeled by the City Council a few months ago with new promenades and children's play areas, renewing this traditional family leisure space next to the Sanctuary, in which also a Miniature replica of the Sanctuary, which offers tourists and especially blind and visually impaired people the opportunity to discover this monumental space through touch, within the project of the Department of Urban Development to create an air typhological museum Free from the main historical sites of the city.

This summer, in addition, the fence that previously existed in the esplanade annexed to the garden has been removed and a new one that delimits the new viewpoint has been installed.

Likewise, a curb has been placed that frames the new promenade area, two drinking fountains to serve pilgrims, tourists and visitors, an irrigation network that covers the entire new green zone and the corresponding tree-lined trees in this area. , conformed by a small palm grove, and the whole environment has been paved and paved.

New vandal-proof design benches

Likewise, in the central garden 10 benches of English wooden model have been installed, and 9 design benches with geometric shapes that simulate waves, of vandal-resistant characteristics, made of concrete and painted with anti-graffiti products.

A comprehensive action plan in La Fuensanta

In 2018, thanks to the collaboration agreement signed by the City Council and the Bishopric to rehabilitate this emblematic environment, a series of works were carried out that recovered the historic Mirador del Santuario.

The access ramps to La Fuensanta were also fixed and the walls and masonry were reformed, improving the accessibility of this environment.

Likewise, the post-temple garden was completely renovated, conditioning the pedestrian promenade, replacing curbs and repairing flower beds;

a new playground for children was installed;

and works were carried out that improved access to the Sanctuary, in order to guarantee the safety of the thousands of faithful who visit this environment.

An investment of more than 41,000 euros to improve almost 600 square meters of this emblematic environment

The City Council and the Bishopric have agreed to renew the agreement, which implies the signing of a new agreement in 2019, to continue with the renovation and rehabilitation works around the Sanctuary;

actions that will be carried out in the area adjacent to the Quitapesares platform, on the access roads.

Specifically, the Fuensanta hillside will be rehabilitated, next to the Sanctuary, with an investment of 41,237 euros.

In the coming months and as a result of this agreement, the replacement of masonry, the repair of walks and viewpoints, the removal of trees that are in poor condition and the repair of coronations, among other actions, are planned.

The new works, which are framed within the Comprehensive Action Plan in Fuensanta, will be carried out in an area of ​​587 square meters.

During the works, the necessary measures will be taken to avoid landslides, landslides and collapses, guaranteeing the safety of tourists, visitors and pilgrims.
