Light pulses to end contamination by textile dyes (17/08/2019)

Textile coloring is one of the most polluting sources on the planet.

'Journal of Cleaner Production' publishes the study of researchers from the UCAM Molecular Recognition and Encapsulation group that, with the collaboration of the Water and Soil Quality Group of the IDAEA-CSIC of Barcelona, have managed to degrade them quickly, easily and ecological

Dyes are not fixed to fabrics, but are dumped, thus becoming a serious environmental problem.

The novelty of this study lies in the adaptation of the light pulse technology, coming from the food field, in an advanced oxidation process, in which a powerful ecological oxidant that degrades the dyes is generated.

The application of this fast and simple method would allow the use of compact reactors and / or the treatment of large quantities of effluents from the textile industry in reduced times.

This would reduce the environmental impact of the textile industry.

"We believe that, since this is a versatile and easy-to-use technology, it can also be applied in other sectors," explains José Antonio Gabaldón, principal investigator of the REM group.

Participating researchers:

Sofía Martínez-López, Carmen Lucas-Abellán, Ana Serrano-Martínez, María Teresa Mercader-Ros, Nerea Cuartero, Patricia Navarro, Sandra Pérez, José Antonio Gabaldón and Vicente M. Gómez-López.
