Different works in the Majal Blanco will allow to prevent fires, conserve their biodiversity and improve their capacity of carbon sink (10/08/2019)

As every year the City of Murcia performs preventive work and improvement of the forest mass of municipal forest parks, among which stands out the Majal Blanco Forest Park for its extension, the largest in the municipality with almost 875 Ha, and for its situation, located in the Carrascoy and El Valle Regional Park and in the Place of Community Importance (Natura 2000 Network) of the same name.

Under these premises, a preventive forestry project in the Majal Blanco is being processed by the City Council of Murcia that will prevent fires, conserve biodiversity and improve its carbon sink capacity

These works will be preventive against forest fires, reducing the fuel load of the forest to avoid the vertical and horizontal continuity of the fire in the forest mass.

With the application of these tasks, it is also intended to contribute to the conservation of the park's biodiversity, whose forest mass is dominated by the Carrasco pine and to a lesser extent by the pine pine, but areas of high environmental value of the area will also be favored. park, as are the thermophilic carrascales, which constitute relict habitats of wetter climates that occurred in the Region of Murcia in the past, and that have lasted until today relegated to shady areas of the Carrascoy mountain range.

Another notable and direct contribution of these works on the environment is the preparation for the adaptation to climate change of this forest mass, favoring a more homogeneous woodland structure, allowing its growth in optimal conditions and ultimately increasing the resilience of these forests, in in line with the strategic objectives approved in the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy of the municipality of Murcia 2030.

Directly, these works will allow these forests to improve their carbon sink capacity, removing CO2 from the atmosphere.

Other beneficial effects generated by these preventive treatments result in the amount of organic carbon in the soil, by incorporating the plant debris into it, which favors a better structured soil for the root growth of plants.

The works will mainly consist of pruning and clearing of areas of the mountain where it has been estimated, through field work and with the help of modeling procedures and analysis of Lidar data, a density of woodland that poses a high risk of fire, in addition to suppose problems of competition between the feet, stress and weakening, as well as the correct management of the residues generated during this process, preventing the appearance or punctual foci of forest plagues by means of suitable techniques of treatment and removal of the wood of the mount.

The generation of this waste calculated in the whole project amounts to 1,208 tons.

Depending on the work areas and the machinery that can be accessed, the waste will be splintered for return to the ground or cut into fragments not exceeding 50cm in order to avoid possible sources of forest pests.

Finally, thicker waste will be stacked for storage and transportation.

The treatments that will be developed of pruning and clearing have been classified by the delimitation of areas according to the densities studied, and cover an area of action within the park of 75.67 Ha.

The budget for this project amounts to 145,721 euros and the expected execution period is 4 months.

In addition to this project, the municipal company Urbamusa has developed another road repair project of the Majal Blanco, in order to fix some of them to keep them functional and in good condition, as well as repair sections of ditches that have deteriorated with the passage of weather.

The works budgeted for this task amount to 69,652.84 euros.

The execution period will be 2 months.

The sections of the roads to be reconditioned are located near the Barranco Blanco, asphalted access road to the Nature Classroom, as well as those that ascend to the Cabezo del Alto and Águila peak.
