The spokesman, who recalls the serious consequences for health, points out that airborne particles are punctually caused by intrusions of sub-Saharan fine dust, but mostly by industrial processes, traffic and agricultural work. "
The Socialist Municipal Group believes that a responsible municipal government would be working on preventive measures and forceful solutions to tackle the episodes of pollution, which are increasingly frequent.
"Of course, what is not serious is to justify the high pollution rates due to atmospheric phenomena and wait for them to escape," says the socialist spokesman, José Antonio Serrano.
"We are very concerned about the health of the residents of Murcia, so we can not help claiming a better air quality for our municipality because, if we do not take measures, we will be facing a serious health problem. In fact, pollution it is already having important consequences that we should not turn our backs on as if they were sporadic outbreaks and passengers, since we run the risk of acquiring greater reach. "
Serrano also refers to the recent news that reports that 11% of new cases of asthma in children in Europe (66,600 cases annually) can be prevented if only air pollutants are reduced to the threshold recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Therefore, "our alarm and our constant calls for attention to take well-planned and designed measures are more than justified. The increasing presence of airborne particles, the so-called 10 pm and 2.5 pm, promptly caused by Intrusions of sub-Saharan fine dust come mostly from industrial or traffic processes and also from agricultural work. "
For the socialist spokesman, we must start by having a complete and rigorous network of sensors and measuring stations, as other cities have, that are constantly dumping data so that the population is informed.
In Murcia "we have only one measuring station, which is absolutely insufficient, since it does not measure the state of the air in the north or east of our municipality and, in addition, is not able to measure suspended particles pm 2.5, which because of their diameter are the biggest problems, because they can reach the depths of the lungs, and some can even reach the bloodstream. "
To this, he points out, "we add that during this year the San Basilio station did not measure the PM 10 particles for almost 50 days, so quantifying and assessing the real situation of the air in Murcia is very difficult."
Remember that so far this year has exceeded 16 times the recommended threshold in PM 10 particles. "This we know, because we must bear in mind that the San Basilio station has not yielded data for almost 50 days, so the figure may be even higher. It is important to report on the 'Protocol of measures to be taken in pollution episodes for the municipality of Murcia', which we promote from the Socialist Group and establishes that this limit should not be exceeded more than 35 days in a year " .
Serrano, who also refers to the need to meet the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, insists on monitoring air quality in order to measure pollution levels by areas so that the population is sufficiently informed and so that, of course, the recommendations are adopted quickly.
"It is essential to have the information to be able to act and also to have a battery of measures with which to reduce as much as possible the polluting episodes," he said while recalling the socialist proposal to provide free public transport service when worrying peaks are reached.
