The Councilor for Social and Family Rights, Pilar Torres, visited this morning the facilities of Nueva Cocina Mediterráneo, the company that awarded the Home Meals service.
The City Council allocates more than 330,000 euros each year to the municipal food delivery service, aimed at elderly and disabled people, with the aim of improving their daily quality of life at home, which is integrated into a comprehensive package of care services and care in the environment provided by the Department of Social and Family Rights aimed at this sector of the population.
"Murcia is a pioneer in the provision of this service in which since its launch in 2006 it works in close coordination between Social Welfare and the Health Service, in order to ensure maximum nutritional and health quality controls from the beginning of the process of elaboration and preparation of the menus until they reach the table of the people served, and the menus are fully adapted to the different pathologies that the elderly can present, thus taking care of their health and acting at the level preventive through an adequate and balanced food diet, "said Councilwoman Pilar Torres.
The menus that the elderly receive in their homes are distributed by specially trained personnel for this task, in refrigerated vans and prepared for it, carrying out the whole process of preparation, packaging and distribution of meals under the most strict quality and food safety controls .
But in addition the food that is prepared and served to the elderly is very good, as well as the people served, since it fits the flavors and traditions of our gastronomy in addition to keeping a perfect nutritional balance and organoleptic qualities.
Currently, there are 303 people who benefit from this service and in 2019, 49,301 menus have already been served, a service that is complemented by the Home Care, the Telecare service and the Family Respite service in homes to people with functional dependence .
The Department of Social Rights will expand the funding for this service from next year 2020 through the new contract that will come into force, which will serve a greater number of older people given the growing demand that this service is experienced and the high degree of satisfaction for the meals provided.
The municipal technicians are working on the preparation of the specifications that will establish exactly this increase in financing.
It should also be noted that all the services provided by this department aimed at care and care in the environment, such as home help, telecare or family respite, are free for the beneficiaries and their families, except for the contribution of 2 euros per menu with which users participate in the case of meals at home, assuming the rest of the cost the City Council itself.
