These are two buses and two minibuses that run on compressed natural gas and add more seats and reduce pollution.
In the next two years, another 6 new buses will be added to the fleet, consisting of 36 vehicles.
José Ballesta: "In Murcia we are addressing the problem of climate change through the 'Clean Air' roadmap, which includes several fronts of action: the Electric Vehicle Strategy, the commitment to 100% clean means in municipal services, the Bicycle Strategy, alternative options to agricultural burning and also the promotion of our green areas, such as the 2030 Forest Plan, and the pedestrianization of healthy axes. "
The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Youth and Sustainable Mobility, Rebeca Pérez, presented today the new vehicles that are incorporated into the municipal public transport fleet;
two buses and two minibuses that work with the clean energy of compressed natural gas and that will improve the quality of service, adding more capacity for seats and reducing pollution and the emission of polluting particles up to 99%.
"Successful cities in the future will be those that achieve an intelligent balance in the different components of the following urban trilogy: economic competitiveness, social cohesion and environmental sustainability," said the mayor, who added that "in Murcia we are addressing the problem of Climate change through the 'Clean Air' roadmap, which includes several fronts of action: the Electric Vehicle Strategy, the commitment to 100% clean means in both public transport and road cleaning services, the Strategy of the Bicycle, free services alternative to agricultural burns and also the promotion of our green areas, such as the 2030 Forest Plan, and the pedestrianization of healthy axes in urban environments â€.
With a total investment of € 800,000, paid in full by the concessionaire, the four new vehicles total 212 seats.
"In 2016 we already increased the fleet with two new vehicles, now we do it with four more and, in the next two years, we will incorporate another 6 new buses to the fleet, which have a half-life of 6 years."
Metropolitan Mobility Plan
This is an action that is part of the Metropolitan Mobility Plan of Murcia, the new transport model of the City Council, which will favor sustainable mobility with new clean means of transport and will allow to reorder and implement the lines that provide the service between Murcia and districts , which will become municipal at the end of 2019, once the Community yields the powers.
A fleet of 31 clean vehicles
The urban transport service of Murcia, which began with 24 buses, now has a fleet of 31 vehicles powered by compressed natural gas: 18 minibuses with 18 seats plus 1 PMR, 2 microbuses with 31 seats plus 1 PMR, and 11 74 seater buses plus 1 PMR.
Natural gas is a source of clean energy, which reduces particle emissions by 99%, nitrogen oxide emissions by 90%, carbon monoxide emissions by 25%, which does not generate ash or waste solid and stands out for its low noise emission levels.
The municipal bus fleet registers about 2.5 million passengers a year and its workforce consists of 94 workers, all of them from the municipality of Murcia, including drivers, inspectors, mechanics and administration personnel.
Specifically, the new minibuses have greater capacity than the old ones, passing 10 seated seats and 12 standing, to 17 seated seats 14 standing (plus the corresponding one for people with reduced mobility).
