José Ballesta presented the 'Objective Pool 2023' plan, which encompasses four major measures aimed at building fountains and renovating the historic ones.
The plan welcomes the restoration of the most emblematic sources of the entire municipality, such as the Clock Tower (Tocinos Bridge), the José Cánovas Garden (Beniaján) and Avenida Libertad (Guadalupe).
The project also includes the cleaning and renovation of four large lakes, located in the Salitre garden, La Seda, Fofó park and Los Patos park (San Ginés), and the construction of ten new ornamental fountains in the city.
The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, accompanied by the Councilor for Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, José Guillén, visited the Salitre garden this morning, where he presented the '2023 Pool Objective' and visited the works currently being carried out in the Lake of the park, which before September will look completely renovated and will have low consumption lights, providing night lighting throughout the environment.
“Our more than 3,000 green spaces in the municipality as a whole are places of leisure and family gathering, but they are also our letter of introduction to the rest of the world, that is, they build 'City Brand', so we will continue to empower them†, said José Ballesta, who added that “water is very present in the history of our city, it is an indispensable element in the Mediterranean gardens from its origins and we will give it a central place in these spaces, allocating more than one million euros to 'Pool Objective 2023',
This initiative is part of the actions aimed at curbing and reducing the effects of climate change, as well as the Urban Forestry 2030 strategy, which will involve the planting of 100,000 new trees, doubling those currently in existence, and the Shadow Plan in children's play areas.
'Target Pool 2023' is made up of four major measures.
Specifically, the actions are as follows:
1. Construction of ten new ornamental fountains
The 'Objective Pool 2023' will involve the construction of 10 new large ornamental fountains, scattered throughout the most emblematic places of the city, such as Santo Domingo, San Esteban, Plaza del Rocío, Juan Torres Fontes Garden, Liberty Avenue and Abenarabi, among others .
These works will begin in September and end in December, with an approximate budget of 250,000 euros.
2. Renovation of nine major works: four ponds and five emblematic sources
Currently, Park and Garden technicians are working on the removal of sediments and sludges that are deposited at the bottom of the Salitre and La Seda lakes.
Before September, the month in which the performances in both gardens will be finished, the ponds will be illuminated with LED lights, which will extol the surroundings and the key elements of the parks with new colors, such as the La Seda fireplace.
Also, in September the railings of the lakes located in the Fofó park and in the popular Los Patos park, located in the district of San Ginés, will be renewed, which in turn will be illuminated with low consumption lights.
In addition, work will begin to improve the status of five emblematic fountains, located in the Circular Square, the Clock Tower House (Tocinos Bridge), the José Cánovas Ortiz Garden (Beniaján), the Juana Jugán Avenue (Tocinos Bridge) and the Liberty Avenue of the district of Guadalupe.
Incorporating new games of jets, low consumption lights and vegetation, as well as renovating the multimedia equipment of the sources that previously had one, as in the Circular Plaza, are some of the measures that will be implemented.
These actions, which began last week in the gardens of Salitre and La Seda, will take place within six months, both in fountains and lakes, with a budget of 326,652 euros.
3. 100,000 euros per year will be allocated to the construction of fountains in Murcia and its districts
Another of the measures that make up the 'Operation Pool 2023' project is the investment of an additional 100,000 euros per year, for five years, for the construction of new sources in the municipality and its districts.
In this way, in five years a total of 500,000 euros will have been allocated to the construction of spaces with water in this line of the '2023 Pool Objective'.
4. Annual ideas competition
In addition, the plan contemplates the holding of an annual ideas competition, in which the winning project will be executed.
The bases of the contest, whose main theme is the construction of sources in a creative and coherent way, will be provided in the coming months.
To the four major actions mentioned, the sources that the City Council has already built are added, such as Murcia Río, which has a wooden stand integrated in it, giving the right bank of the Segura a residential area in which pedestrians can rest.
Next to this source, in addition, the construction of a new one is planned in the coming months, which will be located around the current facilities of the EMUASA and Hydrographic Confederation service, on the right bank, integrating these facilities and embellishing the environment.
Daily care of 8 lakes and 79 municipal management sources
In summer, "the Parks and Gardens Service intensifies the control of the fountains and lakes of Murcia and its districts, through periodic reviews and actions, to prevent the generation of bacteria that endanger public health due to high temperatures", José Ballesta recalled on the spot.
Specifically, technicians take care of eight lakes daily, totaling 17,893 square meters and 8,900 cubic meters, located in Infante, Santa María de Gracia, Vistabella, El Salitre, La Seda, El Raal, Garden of the Three Cups, Bacon and San Ginés Bridge.
Also, every two days they review and chlorinate 79 ornamental fountains and take care of about 200 municipal drinking fountains.
