The National Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Spain (ANQUE) in its last Governing Board agreed to grant the Gold Medal of ANQUE to Antonio Bódalo Santoyo, professor emeritus of the University of Murcia.
This medal is given recognition for "his intense dedication to our Institutions, as well as his professional and personal merits."
He graduated in Chemical Sciences in 1963 from the University of Murcia, in October of that same year he joined the Electrochemical Laboratory of the Rocasolano Institute of the CSIC in Madrid, to carry out his doctoral thesis on Corrosion of Iron and Steels in Molten Salts, which was qualified in 1967 with Outstanding cum laude at the Complutense University of Madrid.
At the end of the experimental phase of the thesis, at the end of 1965, he was hired by the company Cremades y Cia. De Murcia as director of his tin recovery plant, until 1969 when he joined the University of Murcia as an associate professor.
Combining teaching and research tasks with management, he has been secretary of the Faculty of Chemistry (1979-80);
Secretary General of the University of Murcia (1980-82);
Vice Chancellor for Research, 1990-91, and Director of the Department of Chemical Engineering (2005-2010).
Likewise, he has held the positions of general director of Universities of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia (1982-83), Mayor of Murcia (1983-87), and Public Administration advisor (1991-93).
From 1990 in which it was formed, until today, it belongs to the Research Group: 'Analysis and Simulation of Chemical, Biochemical and Membrane Processes' of the University of Murcia, as Principal Investigator until 2009. The main lines of research The group includes: Design and simulation of reactors with immobilized enzymes, Enzymatic separation of racemic amino acid mixtures, Enzymatic synthesis of polymeric esters, Treatment of effluents with membrane processes, and Elimination of phenolic compounds and other organic pollutants with bioprocesses and photodegradation techniques .
He has participated, as a member of this group, in 22 research projects since 1983, being in 18 of them Principal Investigator.
He has also participated in a LIFE Project, with the Company Aquagest Levante, SA;
and has been principal investigator in 12 Contracts with Companies.
Of all the research done, he has published 144 articles in scientific journals and is co-author of 2 patents.
He has also presented 42 communications to national congresses, 102 to international congresses, has participated in the publication of 7 books and 15 book chapters, and has directed 22 doctoral theses.
After his retirement, he has continued to be linked to the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Murcia as professor emeritus.
He has been a member of ANQUE since 1961 and a member of the Chemistry College of Murcia, since 1966. He has been 1st dean of the General Council of Chemical Colleges of Spain (2003-2012), president of the Chemical Association of Murcia and Dean of the Illustrious Official College of Chemists of Murcia, from 1995 to March 2019.
