The artist Cristóbal Barbero wins the 19th painting prize at the University of Murcia (02/07/2019)

The University of Murcia has failed on Monday the 19th prize for painting, which has fallen on the work 'Rescate', by Cristóbal Barbero, for which the artist will receive a grant of 5,000 euros.

In the words of the author, "the object of study of my artistic research deals with the essential grammar of physical contact, based on our own knowledge in the field of anthropological and sociological sciences, and on reasoning about space taken from the perspective of artistic practice , we propose an analytical study of contact as a means and as an agent that creates ".

The winning work "entails the commitment of physical contact with our natural environment, an approach to what surrounds us, charging emotional truth to the piece," adds Barbero, "where the things that have once been in contact and then are separated, they remain united by a powerful bond that is physical contact. "

Cristóbal Barbero has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Murcia and is currently studying doctorate at the Faculty of Fine Arts.

He has made numerous individual exhibitions and has won several prizes for painting and sculpture, among which the first prize for sculpture in the 'XII Young Creation' of Murcia in 2004 and the 'Sculpture Award Tribute to José Loustau' award in 2015 stand out.

Two accésits have also been awarded, corresponding to Kihong Chung for his work 'Mensaje de peso' and Francisco Díaz for the work 'Reposo'.

The ruling has taken place in the UMU Museum (Old Artillery Barracks), the jury being composed by the rector José Luján, as honorary president, and acting as vocals Rosa Brun, painter and teacher of the Faculty of Fine Arts Arts of the University of Granada;

Pedro Cano Hernández, painter and Doctor Honoris Causa for the UMU;

Carmen Hernández, director of Espacio Molinos del Río-Caballerizas and manager of the Ramón Gaya museum;

Mª Ángeles Sánchez, director of the Art Nine Gallery;

and Sergio Porlán, director of the Párraga Center.
