The University of Murcia (UMU) is again the headquarters of Murcia in the tenth edition of the Summer Science Camps organized by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), of the Ministry of Science , Innovation and Universities, with the aim of encouraging scientific vocations.
The city will host 120 students from all over Spain with brilliant records.
Students of 4th ESO and 1st Bachillerato, made up of 92 girls (77%) and 28 boys (23%), will live a unique experience in which they will be able to discover and start their research in science together with experts from the institution.
Throughout the month of July 2019 these campuses offer students from different parts of Spain such as Andalusia, Valencia, Madrid or the Canary Islands, the opportunity to establish direct contact with the daily work of researchers in a university and multicultural environment that will help them Define your future projection of studies.
This experience is completed with scientific-cultural leisure activities such as visits to museums and other sports and musical activities.
Among them, we can highlight the visit to the beach of Manga del Mar Menor, a scientific musical show, the visit to the UMU Aquarium in English, the scientific monologues of humor of the writer and mathematician Santi García Cremades and the journey along the coast in catamaran.
The Summer Scientific Campus program, which is developed simultaneously in laboratories and departments of several International Campus of Excellence, among which is the Campus Mare Nostrum of the UMU and the UPCT.
Science for all tastes at the UMU
Every week of July the UMU will receive a total of 30 students that will be divided according to the activity previously selected.
Accompanied by monitors, they will attend each day to the different challenges programmed in the projects.
The students of 'H20: Menuda Molecule ... Pure, Vital, Healthy, Natural?'
they will become a CSI scientist of water analysis.
This original proposal of the UMU will develop their skills in the handling of equipment and autonomous work in the laboratory.
In 'biomedical applications of biotechnology', they will attend lectures, practical activities and a visit to the facilities of the UMU's zebrafish laboratories to understand what employment they can have in the area of ​​biotechnology.
They will be lucky to work in laminar flow cabinets with cell lines, where they will perform different methodologies such as protein overexpression or transfection.
'Safe food for a healthy life' in this project of the UMU students will become aware of their role as consumers and start in the quality control of food.
In this way, groups can learn from different aspects such as microbiology quality (mainly hygiene and safety), nutritional quality (macronutrients and micronutrients) and sensory quality.
The fourth project, organized by UPCT professors, will be 'A photographic journey to the stars', where they will explore the history of the stars' photography.
From the first images obtained with the most rudimentary analogical methods, to modern astrophotography based on digital cameras and telescopes, also entering into the future of this field.
