The Culture Service of the University of Murcia, through the Visual and Visual Arts Classroom, has awarded the 18th Photography Prize to Alicante's José Carlos Bernabéu Pérez.
The winning work, consisting of a series of five photographs grouped under the title 'Dialogues with the invisible', has received a financial prize of 1,200 euros.
In the words of the artist, "these photographs establish a process of dialogue between one or several subjects that remain invisible to the rest, it is the communication with any material or immaterial entity that usually goes unnoticed by the senses or attention".
31 artists participated in this economic modality with a total of 104 photographs.
In addition, four honorable mentions have been awarded.
Bernabéu is an amateur photographer for more than twenty years who belongs to the photographic club of Alicante.
In the last five years he has trained with photography professionals such as José María Mellado, Alain Perdomo, Carlos Balsalobre, Roderic Plá, José Manuel Saiz, Juanjo Fernández and Carlos Serrano, among others.
Some of his works have been used to illustrate covers and interiors of magazines and books.
He has also participated in several group exhibitions and has won several awards in national photography competitions.
The awarded and selected works, a total of 55, will become part of an exhibition at the University of Murcia.
Photo production prize
As a novelty, this eighteenth edition of the Photography Prize has included a prize for photographic production organized in collaboration with La Cámara Roja, consisting of the printed production of an exhibition project and its exhibition in a UMU room during the year 2020.
This award went to Julieta Varela Manograsso, a graduate in Fine Arts from the UMU, with the 'MZA' project, which has been selected among the ten participants of this modality.
The proposal revolves around the concept of territory and, as the artist explains, "aims to explore the area where I live, Murcia, from a different perspective, adopting the point of view of the space exploration vehicle of the planet Mars. This new approach, I pretend to emulate a hostile landscape, with a strange and disturbing atmosphere, like from another planet ".
The jury of the XVIII Photography Prize was composed by the rector of the UMU, José Luján, as honorary president;
and Joaquín Cánovas, professor of the Faculty of Letters of the UMU;
David Flores, director of The Red Chamber;
Ignacio López, professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Granada;
Avelino Marín, art collector;
and Enrique Martínez, photographer of the newspaper La Verdad.
