José Ballesta appeals to the generosity of Murcia: "It will be ten hours to give to others and save lives, in a nerve center of the city as is the City."
Between 250 and 300 blood donations a day are needed to cope with the sanitary and surgical activity of regional hospitals.
Nine out of ten people will need blood for themselves, their family or friends at some point in their lives and in the summer hospitals need donations not to go down.
The acting mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, the director of the Regional Center of Hemodonation, Vicente Vicente, and the director of Radio Murcia Cadena Ser, Domingo Camacho, presented this morning the IV Murcia Blood Donation Marathon, a solidarity day for save lives that will take place next Wednesday, June 12, on the ground floor of the City of Murcia, from 09.30 to 14.30 and from 16.30 to 21.30.
Under the motto 'You are one step away from saving three lives.
Give your best, share life 'this initiative hopes to break the records of the previous two, where in total 1,051 donors were assisted (of which 345 were new) and 875 donations were obtained.
"This initiative, which began in 2016 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hemodonation Center, has been consolidated as a manifestation of the generosity of the people of Murcia in the face of a key moment, such as the summer campaign," said José Ballesta, who indicated that "it will be ten hours to give to others and save lives, in a nerve center of the city as is the City Council.
We hope that solidarity will overwhelm us, as in previous editions. "
Almost 1,500 donors attended
Throughout these three marathons, a total of 1,422 donors have been attended and 1,185 donations have been obtained.
In addition, 422 new donors have been recruited, as reported by the head of Marketing and Donation Promotion of the Regional Blood Donation Center, Antonia Gómez.
From the Blood Donation Center insist that the donation must be maintained throughout the year, since they are necessary between 250 and 300 blood donations a day to address the sanitary and surgical activity of regional hospitals.
José Ballesta praised the work done by this center, "an essential health institution that has become a faithful reflection of a society that is not resigned to remain impassive in the face of the need of the other and has decided to take a step forward to engage with the others in a completely altruistic way ".
As a sign of gratitude to all Murcia who come to donate blood, the Moneo will wear red on the night of June 12.
Who can donate
All those people who want to donate blood, who are between 18 and 65 years old, weigh more than 50 kilos and are in good health are called to participate.
From the Regional Hemodiadontion Center they make a special appeal to the generosity of young people from Murcia, between 18 and 30 years old, since it is important to consolidate the necessary generational change to maintain donations.
During the marathon there will be live radio from the hand of Radio Murcia SER chain, surprises and gifts for donors.
The objective is twofold: increase donations in Murcia and raise awareness of the need to contribute with a charitable and civic act that also improves health resources.
Blood transfusions and their products help save millions of lives a year.
They help patients with hematological and oncological diseases to live longer and with a better quality of life, and make it possible to carry out complex medical and surgical interventions.
They also have a vital role in maternal and child care, pregnancy and in emergency responses to natural or man-made disasters.
Summer campaign: the sick need donations not to stop
Nine out of ten people will need blood for themselves, their relatives or friends at some point in their lives and, currently, the Region has 130,000 registered donors of which around 35,000 are active.
From the Regional Blood Donation Center, they warn that in summer, donations usually fall due to vacations and travel.
However, the consumption of blood components in hospitals does not decrease during the summer, as they are still needed for surgeries, treatments and, above all, for hematological and oncological patients.
Therefore, it is important to raise awareness that donation is an altruistic action that benefits the whole society and that only a sufficient supply can be obtained through regular, voluntary and unpaid donation, so it is necessary to commit to donate throughout the year if you want to maintain a sufficient supply and maintain self-sufficiency in blood components.
