The works of pedestrianization of Alfonso X to La Circular, at full capacity (31/05/2019)

1,400 m2 of new pedestrian zone have already been paved and the axis between the Archaeological Museum and the Social Security Treasury will open in the second half of July.

The works give continuity to the Phase I already executed, an action with which the city center will gain about 15,000m2 of pedestrian surface this autumn.

The acting mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Public Services, Rebeca Pérez, visited this morning the works of Alfonso X El Sabio Avenue (Phase II), "which will be open to all Murcia this autumn, as the works are progressing at full capacity, "said the alderman.

"Already 1,400 m2 of new pedestrian zone have been paved in the axis that goes from the Archaeological Museum to the Treasury of the Social Security.

This environment will be open to pedestrians and cyclists during the second half of July, at which time we will start work on the left section, the one between the Government Delegation and the Plaza Circular ".

The works that are being carried out from Jaime I to La Circular give continuity to Phase I already executed, an action with which the city center will gain about 15,000m2 of pedestrian surface before the end of the year.

"The recovery of public spaces for Murcia is the constant that backbone our City Model.

Returning previously closed spaces, opening them for urban and social recovery, and creating new meeting points for people is the goal of strategic projects such as Murcia Río, Vía Verde, San Esteban, the Old Prison or the Artillery Barracks, that there is to add this great boulevard in the heart of the city that is the Alfonso X El Sabio avenue ", highlighted José Ballesta.

The mayor said that "these projects, along with the construction of new sidewalks in neighborhoods and districts and 37 km of new bike lanes that are being enabled in the municipality, represent the recovery of 145,000 m2 for Murcia, improving the quality of life of people".

5 football fields to explore on foot in the old town

Specifically, this Phase II covers an area of ​​8,217 m2 and 200 m in length, and involves the complete renovation of the pavement and the creation of a modern and uniform urban treatment space, completing the most important pedestrian itinerary of the city;

a reference axis that runs through La Glorieta, Plaza Belluga, Trapería, Santo Domingo and Alfonso X until La Circular;

covering an area of ​​50,000 m2 (equivalent to 5 football fields).

For the execution of the works an integral project has been elaborated that orders the whole vial and gives continuity to the bike path.

In addition, 40 orange trees and planters will be planted, new energy-saving Led luminaires, paper mills, banks and underground containers will be installed.

The crossing of Jaime I will be maintained for motor vehicles.

This work, promoted by the Department of Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, has a budget of 2,198,542 euros and an implementation period of 8 months (started on March 6).

95% less traffic

After the pedestrianization of the section between Santo Domingo and Jaime I, there has been a 95% reduction in traffic compared to the one that circulated before the construction.

The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union, within the framework of the Operational Program for sustainable growth 2014-2020, with the DUSI Murcia IT Strategy: Innovation + Tradition.
