The Community will restore the image of the Blessed Virgin of Fuensanta, patron of the city of Murcia and its garden.
The intervention will be carried out in the Restoration Center of the Region of Murcia, dependent on the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.
The image is going to undergo a restoration process in two phases: the first will consist of an intrinsic and extrinsic study to establish the damages that this image presents.
A second phase will consist in the integral restoration of the work, after the results of the conclusions carried out in the first phase.
It is expected that before the September pilgrimage an exhaustive study will be carried out on the state of the carving to detect possible problems of previous interventions or any pathology that may be affecting it, proceeding to its recovery and cleaning in order to also contribute to its best conservation.
The Restoration Center has state-of-the-art technology in terms of technological instruments and analysis systems that will determine with high precision the real damages of Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta.
Thus, the facilities have X-ray, Infrared Rays, Ultraviolet devices;
endoscopy instruments, reflectography, digitalized macrophotography, stratigraphic studies, etc.
From the Restoration Center the times will be adjusted so that all those activities related to the processes of intervention and restoration of the size do not interfere in the main liturgical and religious acts of said image.
The whole process of study and work done on the image will be reflected in a final report, which will be delivered to the Cathedral of Murcia.
The Virgin of Fuensanta
The image of the Virgen de la Fuensanta has been recorded since the 15th century.
It was in 1802 that the first restoration of the scope was carried out, which was carried out by the sculptor Roque López, Salzillo's main disciple.
The image, of full body, is a wood carving to dress.
From the waist down it is also made of wood, simulating a painted mantle.
He carries El Niño on his left arm and holds a scepter on his right.
The Child blesses with the right hand and with the left holds a ball that symbolizes the Earth, a clear allusion to redemption.
The base on which stands the Virgin is decorated with two angels and a central cherub.
The half moon is the work of Antonio Carrasco, made at the end of the 19th century.
The cult to the Virgin of the Fuensanta is very old, but it is from 1731 when it was considered the main Patron of the city and its garden.
The official curator of the Virgin designated by the Cathedral Cabido is the sculptor José Hernández Navarro.
