20 Public Schools will carry out the activities designed by the Sustainable Development Foundation to promote savings, energy efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Each educational center may choose the acquisition of Electric Consumption Controllers or Solar Thermometers that facilitate the control of the temperature and air conditioning of their rooms.
The councilor for Urbanism, Environment, Water and Vegetable Garden, Antonio Navarro, and the President of the Sustainable Development Foundation, Emilio Ballester Fernández, met this morning with the representatives of the ten selected schools to join the pilot project experience " My Cole Saves with Energy ", whose objective the first year will be to achieve a reduction of 10% in the consumption of electricity of the participating schools, through the awareness and participation of students, teachers and other agents of the educational community, for learning of issues related to electricity, water, consumption habits, savings and energy efficiency.
In 2019 the City of Murcia has doubled the number of centers participating in this energy saving and efficiency initiative, which is already 20.
Those who join the 2019-2020 course to the initiative are: CEIP Avileses, CEIP Our Lady of Wonders, CEIP Professor Enrique Tierno, CEIP Francisco Salzillo, CEIP Our Lady of Peace, CEIP Virgen de la Vega, CEIP Federico de Arce , CEE Santísimo Cristo de la Misericordia, CEE Las Boqueras and CEIP Nuestra Señora de la Arrixaca.
During the meeting, their representatives received information on the tools and didactic resources designed so that the teachers of each center can stimulate activities aimed at saving electricity, fuel and water during the next three years.
"Mi Cole Saves with Energy" is a project designed by the Sustainable Development Foundation to promote savings, energy efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in schools.
10,000 euros of savings
In 2018, the municipal budgets saved almost 10,000 euros thanks to the schools that participated in 'Mi Cole Saves with Energy', which also stopped emitting to the atmosphere the equivalent of more than 22 tons of CO2, of which, almost 60 % are linked to electricity savings and the remaining 20% corresponds to the decrease in water consumption.
It should also be noted that the average savings of the centers that managed to reduce their consumption amounts to 13.44%, exceeding the 10% foreseen for the first year of implementation of the project.
On that basis, if all the schools of the municipality participated, the savings could be more than 100,000 euros linked to the saving of electricity, being able to stop emitting up to 300 tons of CO2 every year.
The schools that achieve the proposed savings goal receive resources to improve the energy efficiency of their facilities and educational incentives that their students can enjoy.
The technical team of the Sustainable Development Foundation informed the representatives of the schools of the incentives that are intended to motivate participation in the pilot experience.
Regarding the resources to improve the energy efficiency of the facilities, each educational center may choose the acquisition of Electric Consumption Controllers or Solar Thermometers that facilitate the control of the temperature and air conditioning of their rooms.
Sustainability workshops and trips to Garruchal
Educational incentives may be carried out in the facilities themselves, through sustainability workshops to remember the impact of our way of life on the natural water cycle, or through excursions to the Fuente Solar de Columbares Environmental and Solar Energy Center, equipment managed by the Fundación Desarrollo Sustainable in the Garruchal, from which issues such as knowledge of climate change and the use of renewable energy, the discovery of biodiversity in the area, the fight against erosion, nursery and organic food production are worked.
In his speech before the representatives of the aforementioned schools, Antonio Navarro highlighted the commitment of the City Council to meet the commitments made through the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in municipal facilities and in the municipality.
The result of this commitment is the collaboration with the Sustainable Development Foundation and the implementation of the "Mi Cole Saves with Energy" project, which already has 20 participating public schools.
Among them, all of special education.
Almost 300 teachers from these centers regularly access the virtual platform of the project to download teaching resources, make inquiries and share experiences.
