The awarding of Honors and Distinctions is celebrated within the events of Murcia Day, which commemorates the constitution of the Council, the medieval antecedent of the City Council, now 753 years ago, by Alfonso X El Sabio

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with members of the Municipal Corporation, presided today at the Palacio Almudí the commemorative act of Murcia Day and named Favorite Children of the City

"We Murcia are the current heirs of a long past of efforts, perseverance and tenacity, we must dare to say that we have roots and identity, we have built a human community to be proud of," said José Ballesta in his speech.

To current Murcians, 'we are flooded with the healthy pride of inhabiting a land with history.

A city whose foundation in the ninth century, land of particular with respect to others that boast of identity and claim historical debts, that ours, our history, began before theirs, "added the Mayor, who also stressed that "Ours has not been the story of a failure, nor the chronicle of an inferiority.

The brilliant history that we have received from our ancestors, which over the centuries have shaped an identity of which we are proud, is not a fantasy or mythology.

Our history and traditions are not a whim or a false intellectual construction, but our legitimate right to feel immense in the fecund breath with which the spirit of the common people and sovereigns of Murcia took shape and character over the centuries.

Commemoration of the council

The award of Honors and Distinctions of the City is celebrated within the events of the Day of Murcia, which commemorates the constitution of the Council, the medieval antecedent of the City Council, now 753 years ago, when Alfonso X El Sabio granted the Privilege Shot to Murcia May 14, 1266

The event , which featured the musical performances of the Orfeón Fernández Caballero, the Azarbe Group and the Virgen de la Vega Choir and Dance Group, is celebrated because "it is good that we recognize the best of our people," said the mayor. in his speech.

It takes place 'as an act of justice to recognize their merits and effort, - added José Ballesta - but also as a rigorous and energetic example for all of us in the current times of confusion'.

Mari Trini: a Murcia of universal talent

María Trinidad Pérez Miravete Mille, Mari Trini, has been named Favorite Daughter of the City of Murcia, posthumously.

Recognized as one of the most outstanding Spanish singers and composers of the 70s and 80s, she achieved great successes that allowed her to sell more than 10 million albums in Spain and Latin America.

The mayor pointed out that she had a full, complete and intense life.

Murcia, Madrid, Paris, London, Barcelona and again Murcia and worked with the great singers and composers of the moment.

For decades she was an outstanding ambassador of her land and actively participated in its celebrations.

Serenades and boleros and parrandas that bear the name of Murcia all over the world

Talking about the Parrandboleros is, in fact, talking about Murcia and Murcia, explained the mayor, because they are legitimate heirs of the rondallas de la huerta, the musical groups of the districts, the historical tunas of our University or the ancestral song of the Auroros.

They have been distinguished today with the Silver Medal of the City of Murcia coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the creation of the group, which throughout its history has demonstrated its altruism with causes of solidarity and links to the culture of our municipality.

Virgen de la Vega: half a century defending Murcia's roots

The Folkloric Group Virgen de la Vega, which throughout its 50 years of existence has recorded a full and enthusiastic dedication in favor of the traditions and culture of Murcia, has also been instrumental in the promotion of dance, singing and the gastronomy of our municipality.

In this sense, the mayor said that 'tradition is a necessary link between what has been and what will be;

it is what surpasses us in time, which makes something durable at the moment in which we live;

it is the memory of a people;

it is the mirror in which everything can be recognized.

For that reason, Ballesta urged us to 'dare to say that we have roots and identity.

That we have built a human community that we are proud of. '
