The University of Murcia develops a physical activity program for women with breast cancer (29/04/2019)

The University of Murcia and the Murcia Association for the Assistance to Women with Breast Cancer (AMIGA) have signed on Monday the agreement and the general protocol of action for the development of a physical activity program for women with breast cancer.

The project 'Breast cancer and physical activity' allows women who are part of the association to be put in the hands of specialized personnel of the sports activities service of the University of Murcia, who will design a training plan adapted to their physical conditions.

More than thirty women are already part of this project and the intention of the UMU is to attend as many as possible.

Carlos Pérez Caballero, head of the Sports Activities service, explained that the first thing these women do is to perform various tests that allow professionals to determine their physical condition and establish a completely personalized physical activity table.

"Throughout the process they are repeating these tests to monitor their evolution," said Pérez Caballero, who stressed that this work is also done in collaboration with the Center for Sports Medicine at the UMU.

In addition to monitoring physical exercise, it is planned to organize talks and workshops with professionals from different fields related to the treatment of breast cancer and physical activity.

Catiana Martínez, president of the Amiga Association, thanked the professionals involved in this initiative for their work and said that "it is a pleasure for us to be linked to the University of Murcia, especially to the professionals who develop this passion with such passion work".

Paloma Sobrado, vice-rector of Coordination and Assistance Services, stressed the importance of physical exercise, as she recalled that "there are studies that show that sport has very positive effects on the physical and mental state of women with breast cancer."

The rector, José Luján, has finished the presentation ceremony ensuring that this collaboration between the UMU and Amiga is another example of "that the University of Murcia is a socially responsible institution."
