The Federation of Peñas Huertanas of the Region of Murcia, with the collaboration of the Department of Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, has organized the Painting Contest 'The crosses of May in Murcia' to be held on May 1 at the Plaza de la Cruz.
The objective of this initiative is to unite the traditions of Murcia with the plastic arts in an environment of high cultural value, creating a meeting point and coexistence of painters who will perform different interpretations of the same theme, the May Crosses.
Councilman Jesus Pacheco explained that "there will be a great informative event of one of our most ancient traditions, which will promote the development, knowledge and participation of such a unique tradition"
In this competition, 14 painters from Murcia will participate, each of whom will sponsor two children between 6 and 12 years old who will make a pictorial work on the same theme.
Therefore, there will be a total of 42 artists painting at the same time in an emblematic corner of the city.
The participating painters will be Guillermina Sánchez Oró, Joaquina Sánchez Dato, Santi García Cánovas, Belen Pereñíguez Antolino, Mª Cruz Fernández Espín, Laida Pérez Blaya and Macabich.
The painters will be José Hurtado, Manuel Vacas, Miguel Mellado, Mateo Pellicer, Pepe Franco, José Miguel Masiá and Virgilio Velayos.
The works can be made on canvas, wood, paper, paint or any other material, being the measures for adults between 45 and 80 cm and for children between 21 and 45 cm.
The style will be free, asking to use as materials oil paint, watercolor, ink, wax, markers, colored pencils ...
The schedule of the contest will be from 10 to 15 hours and during it the children who wish may also paint for which the Federation will give them pictures already drawn on the theme of the contest and coloring pencils.
In the days following the contest, an exhibition will be made of the works made by both adults and children.
