The Spring Festival celebrates the 40th anniversary of the transfer with 750 kilos of Murcian vegetables in the Plaza de La Merced (16/04/2019)

José Ballesta: "This monument, which will be made up of 14 taps from which emanate products from our garden, is a symbol of the rebirth of dry lands transformed into an authentic garden."

Different agricultural companies in the Region, through COAG and FECOAM, donate 750 kilos of lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, grapefruit, oranges, peppers, squash and artichokes.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for the Modernization of Administration and Urban Development, José Guillén, and the president of SCRATS, Lucas Jiménez, today presented the Spring Garden in homage to the 40th anniversary of the Tajo-Segura transfer, which will be installed in the plaza of the University, with the name 'Allegory to the Transfer: 40 anniversary', and that will be composed of more than 750 kilos of vegetables, citrus and vegetables from Murcia.

In the act of presentation were present the vice president of the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Murcia (FECOAM), Manuel Martínez, and the director of the Coordinator of Organizations of Farmers and Cattle Ranchers (COAG), José Ángel Navarro;

entities that donate the products provided by the different agricultural companies of the Region of Murcia, among which are lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, grapefruit, oranges, peppers, pumpkin, artichokes, etc.

The monument to the transfer will be composed of a total of 14 giant taps from which emanate, instead of water, 750 kilos of vegetables and citrus, "a tribute to the water that waters our field and our garden," said the mayor.

José Ballesta said that "symbols are very important for human beings.

We must have symbols that guide us, that remind us what we did and project us towards what we want to do.

This monument that will host the Plaza de La Merced brings together the 40th anniversary of the transfer and rebirth that our Spring Festival represents, the season of the year in which Murcia is reborn, in which everything comes back to life ".

"Murcia wants to celebrate these 40 years of life, the rebirth of some dry lands transformed into an authentic fertile garden thanks to the Tajo-Segura transfer, which ensures the supply of water to 2.5 million people," said the mayor .

This will be one of the 23 Spring Gardens that will appear in the city next week, consisting of 300,000 flowering plants and millions of flowers that will decorate the city in the face of our most international festivities: the Bando de la Huerta and the Burial of the Sardine.

The transfer, in figures

The Tajo-Segura transfer serves 2.5 million people and more than 320,000 jobs depend on it.

This infrastructure, made up of 292 kilometers of canals, aqueducts and tunnels, contributes more than 2,300 million euros to the national GDP.

Since 1978 the transfer brings water from the Tagus River to the head of the Segura and distributes it to the irrigable areas.

Today, thanks to this contribution of water, the Spanish southeast is known as 'the Huerta de Europa'.
