The Governing Board has approved the project and the specifications of 'Las Terrazas del Río', which is the creation of a wooded park of 4,200 m 2 of surface and a leisure area with pedestrian access to the mota next to the Bridge of Iron.
The most important urban action of Murcia River has been launched with the approval by the Governing Board of the project and specifications for the contracting of works for a new access to the Segura, 'Las Terrazas del Río'.
The intervention includes the creation of a wooded park of 4,200 m 2 of surface area and a leisure area next to the Puente de Hierro, where about 50 linear meters of the current masonry wall will be broken, enhancing the citizen's use of space and enabling a connection direct functional and visual.
The aim is to recover the historical relationship maintained by the city and the Segura River in the past, returning the prominence that over the years was lost, especially since the middle of the last century was carried out its route through the urban area to avoid flooding, which entailed the confinement of the sheet of water between the two walls of masonry that today make up its urban image.
Until then, the channel had a much wider width, reaching, in the area of the Puente de Hierro, to the limits of the current causeway of Lieutenant Flomesta.
This wall, despite having access stairs to the riverbed, has definitively separated the citizen from direct contact with the sheet of water.
Murcia will recover the ataluzadas and wooded banks in the Segura
The project that is now being considered, which has a maximum budget of 3,752,091 euros and a one-year execution period, aims to reverse this situation and return the river to the place of privilege that it once had.
For this, Murcian technicians, in agreement with the Hydrographic Confederation, have projected an opening in the channel wall of the 50s, recovering the historical relationship between the forested and wooded banks towards the river.
Thus, the natural slope that historically occupied the disappeared Ruiz Hidalgo Park will be restored, generating a direct pedestrian access that will connect with the canal in that area through large stepped wooden steps and two pontoons for boats.
Its location, close to the Puente de Hierro and approximately half of the 1.8 km of the urban route of the river, will provide a great versatility of use to access, both the bike path and the river walk that is being made in this range .
It will have a gentle slope that will allow maximum accessibility, the descent of boats, bicycles, canoeists or simply for the ride along the riverbed.
Terraces flown on the channel that simulate a reedbed
Overflowed on the river bed, terraces are projected in which areas of stay and observation are located, as well as a kiosk bar that serves this area.
The pillars that sustain these terraces will resemble a cane that is integrated next to the trunks of palm trees in the river landscape and extend over them holding a large translucent "parasols" of methacrylate.
This area, of 600 m 2 , will be located on the strip of wall to be demolished to generate zones of stay and observation of the river, thus generating a new leisure and recreational area called to become a future reference in the urban landscape.
This wooded park of 4,210 m 2 , flooding with floods, will host the installation of a large screen for the screening of all kinds of events, concerts, children's shows or summer cinema.
