Next Sunday there will be a new guided visit to the cemetery of Nuestro Padre Jesús, in this case, with the theme of funeral architecture.
This route will be followed by two more, on 'The cemetery as a reflection of society' and 'Funeral Symbols', which will take place on April 28 and May 12.
The initiative is organized by the Department of Sports and Health, directed by Felipe Coello, and is part of the agreement signed between the City Council and the University of Murcia, along with the Murcian Society of Anthropology, whose goal is to value the cemetery, being reason for study and protection.
Thus, the visit next Sunday, which will revolve around the funeral architecture, will expose how the Cemetery of Our Father Jesus is a clear example of a Mediterranean, architectural cemetery, where from its plant to its numerous cemeteries and mausoleums were designed and built by some of the most relevant architects of the Murcia of the moment.
Thus, the façade, by Pedro Cerdán, and its pantheons conceived in the so-called modern art, reinterpretation of the classic styles that both defined his work, will serve as a starting point for an entertaining and interesting journey to know the works of some of the architects from the time, from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, masters of modernism, eclecticism or revivals.
130 years of social life
'The cemetery as a reflection of society' will be the theme addressed in the next guided tour, on April 28.
In this case, it will become clear how the history of a place, the stratifications of its society, cultural patterns and even political debates are reproduced in its cemetery.
In this way, the different areas and sections of the Nuestro Padre Jesús cemetery, as well as its individual tombs and pantheons, reflect the social life of the city of the last 130 years.
The location of the graves, their architectural style, symbols and inscriptions reveal the role of different individuals, their families and different groups in Murcia society over time.
Based on this approach, the visit offers a first reading of the social history of Murcia.
Finally, on May 12, the explanations of the route will be about the 'Funeral Symbols'.
In this sense, the visit enters into this world of symbolic language, pointing out how the cemetery is a world of symbols, where each detail tells the tradition, where each decorative element has its meaning, and both sculpture and architecture reflect the tastes of the time and are a support of the most varied elements of funerary art: flowers, torches, crosses, everything has a ritual and spiritual meaning with life, death and resurrection.
