Both institutions will collaborate to recover the use of certain emblematic sites for citizens, such as the Plano de San Francisco, Plaza Ceballos, plaza between San Pedro Street and San Nicolas Street and Plaza Preciosa.
The governing bodies of both institutions have given their approval to the agreement this week, after several months of joint work.
The College of Architects and the City of Murcia have closed an alliance to promote the renovation of urban spaces of historical or unique relevance in the city and adapt them to improve their use by citizens.
The collaboration agreement has been approved today by the Governing Board of the City Council, after the governing body of COAMU did the same last Tuesday.
All this, after adding several months of negotiation to agree on the text of the agreement, which provides the basis for undertaking the study and drafting proposals for remodeling different urban spaces.
Specifically, the initial actions will affect the remodeling of the gardens of the Plano de San Francisco, Plaza Ceballos, the existing Plaza between San Pedro Street and San Nicolás Street and Plaza Preciosa.
Regarding the existing gardens in the Plano de San Francisco, which occupy an approximate area of ​​5,200 m2, the main objective will be the enhancement of this space, given that it is one of the main entrances to the city of Murcia.
The solution will seek the renovation and improvement of the conditions of habitability, recreation and enjoyment of the public space, as well as the improvement of its pedestrian and visual connection with the rest of the city.
The proposal must go beyond a simple remodeling of a garden.
It is about setting up a space that invites you to enjoy it, both as a passage area and as a stationary area.
In the case of the Plaza Ceballos, a small pedestrian plaza of about 360 m2 between Simón García street and Pintor Villacis street, its current use is far from being a pedestrian space, due to the fact that it is almost invariably invaded by parked motorcycles.
Therefore, its reform should have as its main objective its recovery for the pedestrian.
For its part, the triangular square of about 650 m2 that is generated at the intersection between San Pedro Street and San Nicolás Street is occupied mostly by a loading and unloading area, in addition to several containers.
The performance that is executed will have to get a more friendly area for the pedestrian, who will acquire a leading role to the detriment of the car, to which a secondary plane is reserved.
Finally, the Plaza Preciosa, located between Alfonso X "El Sabio", Jaime I El Conquistador and Avenida de la Constitución, is a standalone area with an area of ​​about 850 m2, whose design has not undergone any major remodeling since its inception , resulting in an outdated space in relation to its environment.
The proposed action must collect all the necessary actions to update this position.
Project contests
In all cases, the final selection of the project that will be executed in each case will be carried out through the corresponding contest, since the collaboration provided by this agreement refers to the consolidation of ideas, multidisciplinary analysis and study to elaborate reform proposals .
In addition, the COAMU assumes the dissemination of these proposals, ensuring the professional participation of its members through the holding of internal competitions or other means of initiative that the College deems appropriate to use, publications in specialized journals and corporate website, and preparation of a cycle of conferences or other expository formulas that allow presenting the results obtained.
This new way of collaboration between the City of Murcia and the College of Architects is incorporated into other relevant actions in which the contribution of the College has been of extraordinary relevance, such as the reorganization of Avenida Alfonso X El Sabio, the rehabilitation of the building of the "Old Prison" or the enhancement of the San Esteban Deposit and Garden.
