The parties with representation in the Assembly assure the UMU that a regional pact on the Sustainable Development Goals is necessary (03/04/2019)

The political parties with representation in the Regional Assembly participated this Tuesday in the round table 'The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in the Political Agenda', framed in the project 17 ODSesiones of the UMU.

The round table, held in the law room of the Faculty of Law, had the objective of knowing how each political formation plans to include the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs in its electoral programs, as well as the commitments to be acquired in the field of Sustainable Development .

Participants agreed on the importance of a regional pact for the development of the SDGs.

The table was moderated by Juan José Almagro, expert in CSR and ODS and founding president of DIRSE (Association of Social Responsibility Directors of Spain).

On the table Manuel Pleguezuelo, representing the Popular Party of the Region of Murcia;

Diego Conesa, representing PSEO Region of Murcia;

María Jiménez Casalduero, representative of Podemos Región de Murcia;

and Isabel Franco, representative of Ciudadanos Región de Murcia.

The debate began with an intervention by each of the representatives, following the order established by lot.

The first intervener, Manuel Pleguezuelo, indicated "that the 2030 agenda appeals to all of us, with the university having a fundamental role in this generation of debate in the field of the SDGs".

Considers Pleguezuelo that the 2030 Agenda seeks to transform people, so that people transform the world and that it not only focuses on developing countries;

"We must act here, reduce poverty, reduce inequality, but we must work together, not only the different levels of Public Administration, the whole society must participate, without forgetting environmental sustainability, we are in a region very vulnerable to change climate, "he said.

In second place, Diego Conesa, representative of the PSOE of the Region of Murcia, said that "the SDGs are a substantial part of the political agenda of our party."

In this sense, Conesa said that "the 2030 agenda is a space of opportunities, first of all, it serves to make a diagnosis, the ODS1 serves as an example, data from the Region of Murcia indicate that more than a third of children are in families at risk of exclusion and poverty, is an area in which we must work in the coming years in the Region of Murcia.

Then it was the turn of Isabel Franco, representative of Citizens Cs of the Region of Murcia, beginning his speech emphasizing that "we must work to ensure that the SDGs throughout society."

In this regard, he gave an example of the effort made to agree on "the inclusion of a budget line to reduce these waiting lists", which would be framed in ODS3, Health and Welfare.

To close the turn of initial interventions, María Jiménez Casalduero, representative of Podemos Region of Murcia, stressed that "to work in the SDGs do not have to wait to reach the institutions, you can start from the social action groups."

If we had to prioritize, "we should begin by clearly eradicating inequality, economic and gender inequality and eradicating poverty."

On the other hand, he stressed that it is "especially important to work on health and education objectives that are accessible to all."

Finally, he indicated that "we must make a special effort for the environment, water and natural resources."

The subsequent debate focused on the question of whether it was necessary to promote a regional pact for the achievement of the SDGs, something that all the participants agreed with.

The moderator asked the participants about the need to reach a regional pact for the SDGs.

All participants indicating the need to reach a regional pact.

In this sense, Manuel Pleguezuelo indicated that "they are willing to sign a pact and that it should be developed within the scope of the Regional Assembly."

For his part Diego Conesa responded, even, that the commitment must go further, "because it is a general challenge and an urgent obligation."

On the other hand, Isabel Franco showed her favorable response to a pact, although she warned that "this pact must be fulfilled and have a budget."

To conclude, María Jiménez indicated that "a pact is not simply a series of measures, it is a commitment to society, you can be the first political gesture, but we must go further, in the last few years many pacts have been signed, but they have complied, for example the pact against poverty ".

The different policies on migration and attention to refugees also centralized part of a debate that also involved the intervention of the large audience.

The round table is part of the Project 17 ODSesiones, a transversal project developed by the University of Murcia, between 2019 and 2021, and which serves as a meeting platform for faculties, centers, NGOs, public administrations, companies, experts, researchers and students to create awareness of the situation in which we live and try to improve it.

Thus, each month it is dedicated to an SDG consecutively, and the faculties most related to its theme will host all kinds of conferences, artistic exhibitions, cultural and solidarity actions of impact and social transformation, in constant collaboration with NGOs and other sectors of the society.

The month of February was dedicated to ODS1: End of Poverty, March to ODS2: Zero Hunger and this month of April to ODS3: Health and Wellbeing.

In 2015, the countries of the world, with the impetus of the United Nations Organization, adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that seek to meet the world's main needs and ensure that the world be a more just, egalitarian and respectful place with the planet.

This represents a challenge for humanity, which will not be achieved without the help of all sectors of the population.

Universities, with the fundamental role they play both in the present and in the future of society, can not ignore their responsibility in this matter.

Therefore, at the University of Murcia has decided to accept this great common challenge and get down to work, giving light to the Project 17 ODSesiones.
