José Luján: "Any person belonging to or linked to the University of Murcia must know that we actively reject any type of abuse or harassment and we put all our effort to protect it"
The University of Murcia, through the Unit for Equality between Women and Men, has presented on Monday the campaign to disseminate the 'Protocol for the prevention, detection and action against sexual harassment, because of sex, sexual orientation and identity and / or gender expression of the University of Murcia 'in an act that took place in the convalescence building.
With this campaign the UMU intends for the university community to know the existence of this tool against harassment.
In this way, a guide is provided with the steps that must be followed if someone lives or witnesses a situation that could be considered sexual harassment or because of sex.
"Any person belonging to or linked to the University of Murcia should know that we actively reject any type of abuse or harassment and we put all our efforts to protect it," said the rector, José Luján, during the presentation of the campaign.
Lujan explained that "at the University of Murcia, as in any living institution, there may be undesirable situations that we must prevent and, for this, we will use all the weapons that the law provides us."
Therefore, he stressed, this campaign "should serve so that those of us who are part of the university community become aware of our rights and the measures of action that must be taken when a situation of abuse or harassment occurs."
Carmen Sánchez Trigueros, director of the Unit for Equality between Women and Men, has been commissioned to detail the details of this campaign, which will be taken to all centers and faculties of the University of Murcia and will be disseminated through the social networks and all communication channels of the University of Murcia.
Specifically, three audiovisual pieces have been produced that show three situations of sexual harassment, based on sex or sexual identity;
with the objective of helping the university community to identify them as such.
In addition, there will be posters distributed by all the university centers informing of the existence of the protocol and will be distributed more than 10,000 brochures in which a guide is included of the situations that can be object of the mentioned protocol and all the steps that a person must follow believe that you must file a report.
As explained by Carmen Sánchez Trigueros, this protocol, approved by the Governing Council of the UMU in April 2018, is applicable so that any member of the university community (whether student, administration and services staff or teaching staff) and researcher), as well as the staff of contracted services.
In this way, if someone detects or is a victim of any of these situations, you can file a complaint with the Unit for Equality through the UMU general register, by email, by telephone or in person.
The procedure guarantees the confidentiality of the data processed, impartiality, advice and support.
The rector of the University of Murcia also wanted to highlight during his speech that "our Unit for Equality promotes activities and actions that reinforce the prevention of all types of harassment and promote equality between all members of the university community and people linked to it. "
In doing so, he remarked, "we insist on our firm commitment to the development of active policies that integrate equal treatment and opportunities for women and men, without direct or indirect discrimination for any reason."
The presentation of the dissemination campaign has been attended by the Minister of Family and Equal Opportunities, Violante Tomás;
and the general director of Women and Equality of Opportunities, Alicia Barquero.
The counselor has congratulated the University for the development of this initiative "because it is very important that young people know the tools they have at their disposal to report situations of harassment."
Finally Carmen Sánchez Trigueros wanted to thank the voluntary involvement of the students of the theatrical training workshop of the University of Murcia, who has participated in the audiovisual pieces, and also the university television channel and advertising agency Sublima, responsible for the creativity of the campaign.
