In order to strengthen ties between the University and the international institution, Andrés Muñoz, director of the Legal Office of NATO visited the Campus of Los Jerónimos to teach master classes in the Degree in Law and in the Master's Degree in European Union and Human Rights.
Andrés Muñoz, director of the Legal Department of the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Forces of NATO in Europe (SHAPE) visited the Catholic University of Murcia, where he was received by the president of the UCAM, José Luís Mendoza, the vice-chancellor of International Relations and Communication, Pablo Blesa Aledo, and the auditor captain Juan Carlos de la Cerra, director of the Master in Military Law at the UCAM.
In addition to teaching in the subject of European Studies of the Degree in Law and the Master's Degree in European Union and Human Rights, the visit of Andrés Muñoz is part of the preparatory phase of three actions of great relevance for the UCAM: the signing of a UCAM-NATO agreement through which a NATO center of excellence will be established in "legal resilience";
the visit of the students of the Master of Military Law to the NATO headquarters in Mons (Belgium) during the month of May, as well as the award during the course of the visit of the Serge Lazareff Prize 2018 to the Vice-Rector Pablo Blesa Aledo.
Regarding the first aspect, the legal advisor of SHAPE stated that "both institutions agree in the defense of the same values, and in the importance of promoting the education and training of future European leaders".
As a result, Andrés Muñoz expressed during his visit his desire to establish a center of excellence in the UCAM on "legal resilience".
This new concept used by NATO should be understood as the ability of a state and its structures to detect, prevent and, if necessary, resist, manage and recover from a disruptive challenge, also from a strictly legal perspective.
Regarding the second aspect, the close link between NATO and the UCAM goes back years ago, with the incorporation of Atlantic Law into the curriculum of the Master's Degree in Military Law.
Its director, Captain Juan Carlos de la Cerra, said that the future agreement with NATO opens a panoply of opportunities for students of the Master's Degree in European Union and Human Rights, to those of the Master's Degree in Spanish Military Law, and also to future ones students of the Master in International Criminal Law, which will be taught as of the next course in the Campus of the Jerónimos.
Among the benefits to be highlighted, the exchange of students and teachers, and participation in activities in other international institutions.
Likewise, the agreement will facilitate the visits carried out by the students of these Masters UCAM to the NATO headquarters in Mons (Belgium).
Again for the third year, the students of the Master in Military Law will visit the NATO facilities during the first week of May.
In NATO, they will receive teaching on important issues such as logistics, special operations, intelligence and legal advice in the different international missions in which NATO is on board.
In the third place, during the visit to NATO, Vice-Rector Pablo Blesa Aledo will receive the Serge Lazareff 2018 prize, a prestigious award that only eight people hold in Spain, and which is awarded to professionals of value committed to the values of The alliance.
