The UCAM highlights the fundamental role of women in society (08/03/2019)

The UCAM held this morning the 'Women, University and Sports' conference in which women of great social relevance took part who work in different areas such as education, volunteering, communication and sports.

The Olympic champion and student of the Degree in Advertising of the UCAM, Mireia Belmonte, has assured that "every time we put more desire and enthusiasm so that, especially in the most mediatic sports, it becomes aware that it is the same as this is practiced by a man or a woman. "

For its part, the Repsol International Communications Manager, Beatriz Tobio, said that "having diversity in the environment is a matter of social justice, values, equality and, in the end, if we want to have competitive companies that add value and they can adapt to different environments, they have to have diversity within the company. "

In her speech Sr. Maria Cruz Gutiérrez, Daughter of Charity, stressed that "the University has made a precious contribution by dedicating women's day to a broad and extremely important field in the development of women in the world. of Charity we have always been in favor of equality and we have fought from the bottom up ".

The president of the UCAM, José Luis Mendoza, who has participated in the inauguration of the event, said that "we celebrate a very important holiday for our university on the occasion of International Women's Day, on this day we will highlight the role so important and essential that women carry out for the development of a more just society and above all to strengthen the family as the fundamental nucleus of society ".

The UCAM carries out a multitude of actions through its international chair 'Women Business and Sports', to value the role of women in society.

In this sense, its director, María Jesús Bonilla, has declared that it is "a chair that is committed to working for equality and to eliminate all those obstacles that are preventing many women from reaching positions of responsibility or taking a step in their life to have a personal or professional development ".

In addition, he added that "the UCAM is a benchmark in the commitment to women and this chair represents what is working to achieve it."

The rector of the Catholic University, Josefina García Lozano, one of the 10 rectors in Spain in front of 57 men, stressed that "at the Catholic University of Murcia, women are playing a fundamental role in the way they understand the work of the same on the part of our president, José Luis Mendoza, and the respect and coexistence that must be produced between men and women ".

The rector has also stressed the importance that women can, like men, play in harmony their professional and personal lives.

The commitment of the UCAM for women

The presence of women in Spanish university classrooms is the majority and their academic results are better, but they are still disadvantaged when they occupy positions of responsibility.

There are only 10 rectors in front of the 67 rectors, with the highest inequality in public universities, where there are 7 rectors and 43 rectors.

The reality at the Catholic University of Murcia is very different, since it has 16 women in positions of maximum teaching and research responsibility.

They are directed by women UCAM degrees in ADE, Labor Relations, Tourism, Audiovisual Communication, Journalism, Psychology, Infant and Primary Education, Pharmacy, Nursing, Dance and Computer Engineering, as well as the vice-rectorships for Research and Online Education.

There are also 14 women who direct international research chairs, related to different areas of health, architecture, economics, etc, as well as that of 'Women, Business and Sports', and more than twenty lead research groups.

In general, in terms of teaching and research staff, women are 46% higher than the regional and national average.
