Josefina García is one of the few rectors of Spain, while many women are vice-rectors, deans and directors of the Chair at the Catholic University of Murcia
This Friday the International Chair 'Women, Business and Sports' celebrates a day with Mireia Belmonte, Sr. María Cruz Guiérrez and Beatriz Tobio, International Communications Manager of Repsol
The presence of women in Spanish university classrooms is the majority and their academic results are better, but they are still disadvantaged when they occupy positions of responsibility.
There are only 10 rectors in front of the 67 rectors, with the highest inequality in public universities, where there are 7 rectors and 43 rectors.
The reality at the Catholic University of Murcia is very different, since it has 16 women in positions of maximum teaching and research responsibility.
They are directed by women UCAM degrees in ADE, Labor Relations, Tourism, Audiovisual Communication, Journalism, Psychology, Infant and Primary Education, Pharmacy, Nursing, Dance and Computer Engineering, as well as the vice-rectorships for Research and Online Education.
There are also 14 women who direct international research chairs, related to different areas of health, architecture, economics, etc, as well as that of 'Women, Business and Sports', and more than twenty lead research groups.
In general, in terms of teaching and research staff, women are 46% higher than the regional and national average.
Josefina García Lozano, rector of the UCAM, says: "Our president, José Luis Mendoza, defends professional competence regardless of being a man or woman, there is no salary gap in our university, and we are fortunate to be able to combine family life and labor. "
Regarding the national situation, she acknowledges that much progress has been made, but we must continue working "from the perspective of maximum respect and recognition of women for their professional skills".
Estrella Núñez, Vice Chancellor of Research at the University, points out that the later incorporation of women in the university world has made her less present in certain areas of research, "but it is true that right now if there are more than 50% of women, if they are doctorate in the same measure, the scissors effect that is observed in the leadership in research groups will be closed ".
Despite the greater presence of women in universities, it is true that there are still certain degrees where their number is lower, as they are in the so-called STEM - academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
For this reason, Belén López, vice-dean of the Degree in Computer Engineering of the UCAM and vice-chancellor of Online Teaching, claims "the papal of the engineers".
"It is falsely believed that those more welfare degrees are aimed at women, and do not realize that engineering really exists to solve real problems of society, and it is essential to have the vision of women," he says.
