'Connection South' proposes duplicating what is considered the center of the city, ranging from La Redonda to Ronda Sur, which will involve large investments to improve the neighborhoods of this new environment.
The elimination of the railroad track on the surface will allow the city to gain more than 200,000m2 of public space, in which large pedestrian areas, a large avenue, gardens and green and sports areas will be built.
The actions will be decided through a process of participation, with Urban Mappings and Sector Roundtables, to which more than 55,000 residents of El Carmen, San Pío X, Barriomar, Santiago el Mayor, El Progreso, El Infante and the district of P
The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, today presented the project of the city 'Conexión Sur', the plan designed to recover the centrality and prominence of the neighborhoods and districts of the south, which will mean the expansion of the city center towards a space that currently concentrates more than 55,000 inhabitants.
"It is a radical transformation project whose main objective is to recover the centrality of the neighborhoods and districts of the south, through greater cohesion among population centers, uniting people, creating social and economic cohesion through the elimination of the two barriers that historically have delimited them: a natural one, the Segura river, and another artificial one, the railway line ", explained the mayor.
If until now it has been considered that the center of the city was between La Circular and La Glorieta, the Connection South project proposes doubling what is considered the center of the city, ranging from La Redonda to Ronda Sur, which will involve large investments for the improvement of neighborhoods, streets, transport systems and public spaces of this new environment.
The elimination of the railway track on the surface as it passes through Murcia will allow the city to gain more than 200,000 square meters of public space.
'Southern Connection' contemplates the creation of 34,700 square meters of gardens and green areas, playgrounds, living areas and outdoor sports spaces.
Where today are the tracks will open a large avenue, large pedestrian areas and two large roundabouts that will distribute traffic from the new station to all directions.
The investment for the urbanization and reactivation of these spaces - with a direct injection to the neighborhoods of El Carmen, San Pío X, Barriomar, Santiago el Mayor, El Progreso, El Infante and the district of Patiño - will be about 35 million euros .
The City Council will carry out the Urbanization Project for the whole area, since it is expected that this month of March the Murcia High Speed society will carry out the commission to the Consistory for the management of all the land that is released after burying the roads.
A station with North-South-East-West connection
The new station of El Carmen will be intermodal, with commuter and long-distance trains, the AVE, a bus station, an underground car park, taxi stand and public bike benches;
and will be connected to the rest of the municipality towards the four cardinal points.
From the new Carmen station, bike lanes will be left which will extend eastwards along the Green Route of the Costera Sur and towards the west in the direction of Barriomar and Nonduermas, connecting through cyclists routes the more than 200 km of cyclable pathways that vertebrate the town.
In addition, there will be important changes in the environment, with the construction of a hotel complex, commercial areas and an office building, which will boost the economy and trade of the neighborhoods.
In front of the building of the current station of El Carmen will create a large square, which will have twice the surface than the Artillery Barracks.

The background of Conexión Sur: Murcia Río and ADN El Carmen
Southern Connection is the municipal plan that contemplates strategic transformation projects that are already materializing as 'Murcia River', for which Segura is regaining its centrality, ceasing to be a barrier to become a meeting point between neighbors, an initiative in which more than 10 million euros have already been invested;
and the El Carmen urban DNA project, which began nine months ago and is leading to significant improvements in the social, commercial and cultural fields, through the direct participation of residents.
This second line of action has a budget of 1.5 million euros and includes numerous urban improvements (streets, gardens, playgrounds) whose works will begin in the coming weeks.
In addition, throughout the neighborhood of El Carmen, the City is making a battery of investments:
· Rehabilitation of the two pavilions that were missing from the Artillery Barracks (3 million euros).
· Opening of the new cultural space of the Los Coloraos museum.
· The next opening of a new cultural and artistic space for the neighborhood associations of Carmen (the Artistic Laboratory of Carmen).
· Installation of a pioneering video surveillance system.
· The remodeling of the room for the stables culture.
