The City Council has collected 6,244 tons of containers in the yellow containers, 7,586 tons of paper and cardboard from the blue container and 6,706 tons of glass.
José Ballesta: "Murcians are increasingly aware of the environmental challenges facing our society and we have managed to make recycling a daily gesture, with sustained growth from 2015 to 2018 close to 40%."
The mayor of the city, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Pérez, visited the Waste Treatment Center of Cañada Hermosa today and offered a balance of the data of selective collection in the municipality of Murcia , which show that "Murcia recycles 10% more than a year ago, with 20,500 tons deposited in the selective collection containers.
It has been a sustained growth from 2015 to 2018, with figures close to 40% increase. "
During 2018 the data indicate a clear increase in the contribution of waste to yellow containers (plastic containers, metals and brick) and blue (paper and cardboard).
The increase is 9.78% in the collection of packaging and 11% in terms of paper and cardboard, compared to the previous year.
The visit was also attended by the regional director of Treatment and Environmental Management of Ferrovial Services, Jorge Tejedo, and the manager of Murcia of Treatment and Environmental Management of Ferrovial Services, Antonio Igualada.
In total, the City of Murcia has collected 6,244 tons of packaging in the yellow containers, 7,586 tons of paper and cardboard from the blue container and 6,706 tons of glass deposited in the selective container of this material.
For its part, glass has decreased by 2.58%, which means that companies are packing in other types of materials.
"Murcia must know that their effort and commitment to recycling is worthwhile and productive.
We have managed to make recycling a daily gesture that we have incorporated into our day to day, multiplying by five the number of tons recycled since 2000, when the differentiated collection system was started, up to date, going from 4,000 to 20,500 ", explained José Ballesta, who appreciated his "generosity and effort to the neighbors and residents of Murcia."
Blue container
During 2017, more than 6,835 tons of this material were collected, while this past 2018 reached the 7,586 tons of paper and cardboard from the blue container, that is, 11% more.
One of the months that more paper and cardboard was collected was in January, where the largest contribution of packaging and wrapping paper was received on the occasion of the Christmas holidays.
Yellow container
This year, 6,244 tons of plastic, metal and brick containers were deposited in the yellow container.
In 2017 they were 5,664 tons, representing an increase of 9.78%.
The wide dissemination through the media and social networks of videos showing large amounts of plastics and their negative influence on the sea and in natural environments, have achieved greater social awareness of the importance of promoting an economy circular.
New Glass Recovery plant
It is important to point out that the new glass recovery plant that Ferrovial Servicios has started up in Cañada Hermosa has collected almost 1,000 tons of glass deposited in the gray containers (denominated of rest or organic matter), that is, not specific for this material .
The main objective of this facility, which began construction in the summer of 2017, is to separate this organic matter collected for later transfer to the composting plant where it will become bio-stabilized, while recovering the maximum amount of glass possible. between the mixed waste that allows its recycling.
Sludge drying plant
It treats sludge from sewage treatment plants in the Region.
In the year 2017, 18,044 tons were treated in this facility.
and in 2018 it exceeded 18,700 tons.
The main objective of this plant is to achieve a reduction of the mass between 60 and 80%, thus obtaining a biologically more stable product, with minimal water content, without odor and apt to improve the subsequent composting process.
This plant represents a clear commitment to renewable energy, since it works with solar energy, also taking advantage of the residual heat of the biogas engines.
Its four drying tunnels allow to treat 20,000 tons of mud per year in its 4,700m2.
It is planned to double its capacity during this year.
This planned expansion will double this amount to eight drying tunnels, which will allow to treat up to 40,000 tons of mud per year.
Once the work begins, an execution period of 6 months is estimated.
The budget in this second phase amounts to 2.2 million €.
Expansion of the Composting Plant
In this 2019 an expansion of the composting plant is planned, adding a fourth reactor for the treatment of the recovered organic matter.
It will have a capacity of 55,000 tons / year.
The planned investment is 2.7 million euros.
