The Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Murcia welcomes from Monday the international symposium on Women and the Periodic Table of the Elements, which is celebrated in the context of the International Year of the UNESCO Periodic Table and coinciding with the commemoration of the Day of the Woman and the Girl in Science.
The hall of events of the university social center, in the Espinardo campus, has become the epicenter of the tribute to the contribution that throughout history women have had to the world of chemistry and, specifically, around the configuration of the periodic table.
The discovery of the radio by Marie Curie has been one of the topics discussed, although attendees have also been able to learn about the activity of other less famous women and anecdotes about the elements.
Pedro Lozano, dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, has emphasized the importance of bringing together at the University of Murcia two presidents of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and personalities of science from universities and centers around the world.
Lozano has encouraged all students who have attended the event to take advantage of the opportunity of an event like this that will last until tomorrow, February 12.
On the role of women in Chemistry research, Lozano has said that "there are many women who study and that stand out for their good grades", although, he regretted, the problem of their access to job performance is marked by the difficulties the time to reconcile.
The Rector, José Luján, wanted to congratulate the Faculty of Chemistry and its dean for "having taken the initiative in organizing such an important event that the University welcomes with pride", and has stressed the need to continue betting on measures that make more and more girls decide to study science careers.
The Minister of Universities, Employment, Universities, Business and Environment, Javier Celdrán, has highlighted in his presentation that only 30% of those engaged in research are women.
A breakfast for women scientists
One of the central acts of this symposium will be the celebration on Tuesday, at eight thirty in the morning, of a breakfast of women scientists, to be held in the cafeteria of the Faculty of Chemistry.
It is a symbolic event that will be held at the same time throughout the world.
Starting with New Zealand and until arriving in Hawaii, research centers around the world will have this meeting of women dedicated to chemistry.
To all the activities held on the occasion of the symposium, those organized by the Faculty of Chemistry will be joined on Wednesday 13 as part of a day of dissemination on the International Year of the Periodic Table.
Throughout the day there will be informative talks, exhibitions and video projections, among which a 'flasmob' of the periodic table.
In addition, there will be games and playful experiences to promote in a fun way the knowledge about the periodic table of the elements.
The complete program of these days can be consulted in this link.
