Change Murcia urges the Minister of Culture to visit the Salzillo Museum on his next trip to the municipality on the 11th (07/02/2019)

Let's change Murcia, through the deputy of Unidos Podemos, Javier Sánchez Serna, has invited the Minister of Culture and Sports, José Guirao, to visit the city on February 11 to visit the Salzillo Museum to learn more about the hundred of works that this lodges and are property of the State, and is committed to study the possibility of participating in the management and financing of the facilities and the collection.

The spokesman of the municipal group of Cambiemos Murcia, Nacho Tornel, explained that the Salzillo Museum, created in 1941 by the Ministry of National Education, was not transferred by the State in the agreement signed between the Central Government and the Autonomous Community in 1984, -like the Fine Arts and Archaeological Museum of Murcia, for example- so that their management is still linked to the Ministry of Culture.

Among the works of the Museum that are state-owned, stand out the whole of the Bethlehem de Salzillo and its school (1776-1800), which includes half a thousand figures;

50 clay sketches by Salzillo and the Sánchez Araciel family (18th and 19th centuries);

a figure of San Mateo in clay, another of the Dolorosa, two of the Child Jesus and a Saint Anthony of Padua with Baby Jesus and a couple of pencil drawings of Salzillo.

All this group, according to Tornel explained, became part of the Museum in the creation of this, but it is ceded definitively before its inauguration, in 1960. After this date, the Ministry bought, destined to the permanent exhibition of the Salzillo Museum, several works among which were 86 plaster molds of the Bethlehem;

figures of "Joaquín con virgin niña en la mano" and "San José", "Cabeza de San Juan Bautista" and "Cabeza de San Juan Evangelista".

In 1990, the City Council, the Autonomous Community and the State signed an agreement to collaborate in the implementation of actions of conservation, restoration and adaptation of the Museum, but not only was not carried out, but from that year the Ministry left to subsidize the current expenses of the Museum and this has had to survive with the sale of tickets and products of the store-bookshop.

The "precarious situation" in which the Museum is located led to the presentation of a motion in the Plenary Session of the Murcia City Council, in which Murcia Change requested a greater involvement of the Consistory in its maintenance, the creation of an urban itinerary by places of interest related to Salzillo and the constitution of a working group to analyze the economic difficulties of it.

Tornel has highlighted the contrast between the economic means of this center, "so required for its maintenance and promotion", and the data of visits, since it is the most frequented museum space in the Region for many years " , while insisting that the contribution of the Ministry can influence, in addition, in a promotion of this cultural property outside the Autonomous Community.

For his part, Javier Sanchez Serna has indicated that he has "hope" that the letter will serve so that the minister, in his next visit to Murcia, "can reserve a few minutes at the Museum", a space he has defined as "very important" for our city, but which goes through a delicate situation, and from which the regional and state administration have disregarded for too long.
