The City Council duplicates the number of courses, the hours, the budget and those attending the training courses taught since 2015. The objective of the program is to improve the quality of life through active aging, gathered in a guide, which includes the possibilities that the elderly have at their disposal for this purpose, from volunteering or intergenerational activities to artistic, health or cultural proposals.
'Mayores en marcha' is the title of the guide published by the Department of Social Rights and Development Cooperation, directed by Conchita Ruiz, which compiles a wide range of courses and workshops for people associated with the 76 senior centers of the City Council. object of promoting the active aging model.
'We aim to improve the quality of life and one way to achieve this is by optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security, so that people do not experience a decrease in our well-being as they reach their birthday. and aging occurs, "explains Conchita Ruiz.
In this role, the councilor emphasizes that older centers acquire a greater prominence, that they constitute a network that encourages 'active participation, enriching interpersonal relations and favoring the promotion of the image of older people as involved and socially competent citizens' .
In them, the partners have the possibility of participating in the theoretical-practical training actions, grouped into five thematic areas:
- Health & Wellness:
10 types of courses: Gerontogimnasia, Taichi, Chikun, Memory training, Mind-active strategies, cognitive skills, Ballroom dancing, dance therapy, School of health and Aesthetics and health.
8 workshop topics: Self-care, Sleep Hygiene, Fall Prevention, Pelvic floor reeducation, Healthy Aging, Automassage and Body Stretches, Nutrition and Longevity and Healthy Exercise Circuits.
- Personal development:
3 types of courses: Joy generating health, Laughter therapy and Personal development.
2 workshop topics: Positive thinking and Discovering your emotions.
- Artistic:
11 types of courses: Theater, Body expression, Communication techniques, Choral music, String music, Painting, Plastic and crafts, Art therapy, Put music in your life, Culture and art, Cinema: Another form of cultural expression.
- New technologies:
2 types of courses: Information and Communication Techniques (TICs 1) and Digital World (TICs 2).
- Language and Communication:
2 types of courses: English and Writers in Spanish Language.
This guide, of which 8,855 copies have been published, has been distributed, in addition to the social centers for the elderly, to other municipal services, such as social service centers, health centers and doctors' offices and cultural centers. so that this training offer was an accessible resource also to the elderly and adults in general, users of these centers.
The offer of training courses offered by the Department have experienced a boom since 2015, since in these four years the number has doubled-from 70 to 146 in 2018-, the total hours -from 1,992 to 4,038- and the budget -Of 72,190 to 153,530-.
Attendees have also grown, from 1,103 from 68 centers to 1,980 from 74 centers last year.
Greater solidarity
The project 'Mayores Solidarios', initiated in 2017 at the request of the members of the centers, currently has an offer of activities of physical-sporting, formative-cultural and traditional Murcian gastronomy, in which 228 people participate.
Thus, within the physical-sporting proposals, the 'Health on the move' program consists of the realization of hiking routes, lasting one hour, through the lanes of the districts, promoted by between 2 and 4 volunteers.
Currently there are three groups: Hiking group of the CSM of Orilla del Azarbe;
of Casillas and Algezares.
In addition, the Albatalía and Ermita del Rosario have shown interest in starting one.
Included in the knowledge transmission activities, the seniors attend talks on the History of Murcia and the traditional irrigation system and visit the Hydraulic Museum of the Molinos del Rio Segura, given by a volunteer and partner of the CSM of Santiago el Mayor;
talks about the history of Spain in the centers of La Alberca and El Palmar, by a volunteer and partner of the CSM of La Alberca;
and monographic of the Rey Lobo of the CSM of El Palmar.
Finally, this month begins the activity on traditional Murcian cuisine at the centers that request it.
It will consist of talks about the elaboration of Murcian meatloaf, given by a volunteer and partner of the CSM of San Antón.
'Taking care of your health, improve your well-being'
Since 2015, various programs aimed at the elderly have been launched.
This is the case of health education plans, the music and elderly project and intergenerational activities.
Thus, to promote healthy lifestyles among the elderly, between September and December 2018, 116 workshops were held in 56 centers, led by professionals specialized in physiotherapy, nursing, nutrition and psychology.
The program includes 10 health education workshops: Sleep Hygiene and Relaxation Techniques;
Self-care, I love myself, I take care of myself;
Nutrition and longevity;
Postural hygiene and prevention of falls;
Reeducation of the pelvic floor;
Fitness circuits biosaludables;
Automassage and body stretching;
Positive thinking and therapeutic effects of laughter;
How do you feel today?;
Discovering your emotions;
and Healthy aging.
Since last year, the Department of Social Rights and Development Cooperation, in collaboration with the Association Pro-Music, is developing the project 'Seniors and Music', which aims to bring classical music to older people by distributing 40 tickets for each concert that the association programs each season at the Víctor Villegas Auditorium.
In 2018, 13 concerts were held, attended by 520 members of 31 centers, while eight concerts are scheduled for this semester.
Unite generations of children and adults
Uniting several generations in activities that allow mutual learning is the basis of activities and visits scheduled by schools with schools in the area, as well as participation in the University Intergenerational Meeting organized by the University of Murcia.
Among the first are:
Visit to the Christmas Nativity Scene CSM of La Fama by 160 students in 2 groups of the CEIP Narciso Yepes.
Visit to the Christmas Crib CSM La Alberca and environmental activity by 600 students of children and primary school public school.
Intergenerational Activity: Workshop of Edible Wild Plants and Contest of Cooking Recipes elaborated with Wild Plants.
Organized by the Social Center for the Elderly, the Esparragal Cultural Center, the CEIP Our Lady of the Angels and the Home Banking Association.
Participants: 180 students and 8 seniors.
Intergenerational Activity: Petanque class and contest.
Group of fifth and sixth grade of the CEIP Puente de Doñana, organized by the center of La Albatalía, the cultural center and the CEIP Puente de Doñana.
Participate: 18 students and 2 older.
Participation in the "VIII University Intergenerational Encounter.
Activity promoted by the University of Murcia.
Encounter of seniors and students of the Degree in Social Education.
Participating partners of Senior Centers throughout the Region of Murcia.
