The total pedestrianization of the Gran Via Alfonso X El Sabio will be a fact before the end of the year, after the Governing Board has approved today the award of the section from its intersection with Jaime I El Conquistador street until the confluence with the Circular Square
This work, promoted by the Department of Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, directed by Rebeca Pérez, has a budget of 2,198,542 euros and an execution period of 8 months, may start this month.
The remodeling affects an area of 8,217 m 2 and involves the complete renovation of the pavement and the creation of a modern and uniform urban treatment space, completing the most important itinerary of the city, between the river and the Plaza Circular.
The proposal that is going to be carried out goes beyond the simple paving of a street for its pedestrianization, since an integral project has been elaborated that orders the whole road and integrates a wide axis of 415 m in the pedestrian grid of the historic center and recover more than 14,400 m² for living areas.
In this way, the new model of urban mobility is consolidated, based on the prominence of pedestrians and cyclists, which is now applied to one of the most representative arteries of Murcia.
It will keep the accessibility shot to neighbors and services, taxis, distributions and public services, garbage collection and road cleaning, and respect the historical considerations of the environment, the urban landscape, urban ecology and vegetation and lighting conditions.
Likewise, the project takes into account the sustainability, comfort and quality of this public space, both for residents and for the rest of the citizens who daily use the central spaces of the boulevard.
95% less traffic
In this regard it should be remembered that after the pedestrianization of the stretch between Santo Domingo and Jaime I has been a reduction of 95% of traffic with respect to the one that circulated before the work, to the point that the vehicles that passed through this avenue in a The hours are the same that currently travel this road throughout the day.
The project foresees a compatibility between pedestrian traffic with access to neighbors and services, not only in Alfonso X, but also to Santa Clara streets to Gran Vía and Enrique Villar to the University.
In parallel, but segregated and signposted, a two-way bike lane runs through the entire ride.
In the perimeter streets to the performance, Plaza Preciosa, Jaime I and Gutiérrez Mellado is resolved the placement of garbage containers, taxi stops and loading and unloading areas.
In this way, the remodeling supposes an important environmental improvement of the space by means of: suppression of road traffic;
lower noise pollution;
greater "habitable" surface;
rethinking the street cleaning solution (elimination of containers on the surface and circulation of collection trucks), etc.
The project, which will be executed by the UTE Edifesa-Construcciones and Obras Llorente, is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union, within the framework of the Operational Program for Sustainable Growth 2014-2020, with the DUSI Strategy Murcia IT: Innovation + Tradition.
