The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesús Pacheco, presented this morning the renovated Caballerizas Hall, after the archaeological and rehabilitation works that the City Council has carried out, a unique exhibition of civil architecture of the XVIII century that is conserved in the city of Murcia and that this afternoon, at 18.00 hours, was inaugurated with an exhibition of works by the Murcian sculptor Juan González Moreno.
"During the archaeological work, the door that communicated the stables with the old Parador del Rey was uncovered, next to the Old Bridge, which disappeared towards the second decade of the last century.
The action has allowed to recover the frame (with the original stone lintel) of this access that communicated both buildings, returning us a historical link with the old royal inn ", the mayor has revealed.
"This historic property in the heart of the city is open to all Murcia as an Exhibition Hall and cultural space, recovering our heritage and integrating it with the artistic and cultural concerns of Murcia in the 21st century," explained José Ballesta.
Culture, an effervescent sector
The director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Santa Maria de la Arrixaca, Cristóbal Belda, reported during the presentation that "from 2015 to 2018 more than 650,000 people have visited any of the 257 exhibitions held in any of the cultural spaces dependent on the City, a period in which an increase of more than 35% has been registered ".
In this time the City Council has worked on the creation and reform of seven new exhibition spaces: two rooms in the City Hall, Sala Caballerizas, Artillery Barracks, Santa Quiteria Palace and Blood Museum and LAC, which are added to the Museum of the City , Museum of Science, Los Molinos del Río, Ramón Gaya Museum, Almudí Palace, Puertas de Castilla and Casa Museo del Belén.
A vaulted space with sandstone walls
The building, located next to the Hydraulic Museum of Los Molinos del Río, is a singular diaphanous space domed with sandstone walls.
The property (which was rehabilitated in 1988) has an area of 266 m2 and consists of six semi-spherical vaults supported by stone arches.
Its construction dates from the last quarter of the 18th century and is attributed to the master builder of the Tomás Moncalbo Town Hall.
The finalization of the works was executed by the master of works of the Murcian Council, Francisco Bolarín.
The team of the work carried out has had an archaeologist and a restaurateur who supervised the works that began last July, with an investment of 171,000 euros.
The integral action has included the repair of one of the arches whose fragments of stone had been detached and its reinforcement with steel rods, the insulation and waterproofing of the walls, the reconstruction of the sandstone stones of the interior pilasters, the elimination of the graffiti of the exterior and the integral restoration of the facade, among other works.
2019, the year of the Molinos del Río
2019 is a year of celebration for the Molinos del Río Segura space, since it is thirty years since the renovation carried out by the architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg and the inauguration of the Hydraulic Museum, an event that coincides with the reopening of the Sala Caballerizas to continue offering a magnificent architectural heritage to the city and the entire Region of Murcia.
