The capital of the Segura shares the leading role in this itinerary of tourist and heritage interest, with the provinces of Alicante, Almeria, and the countries of Palestine, Sudan, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania and Libya.
The palm grove of Santiago and Zaraiche is one of the most beautiful in southeastern Spain, a historic enclave with more than 760 specimens -some over 200 years old-, which preserves the unique traditional irrigation system of the Huerta de Murcia.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, along with the Councilor for Modernization of Administration and Urban Development, José Guillén, informed today that "Murcia will be part of the first Route of the Palmerals of the South-East of Spain and North of Africa, an itinerary of tourist interest and heritage, in which the province of Murcia province will share prominence with Alicante, Almeria, and the countries of Palestine, Sudan, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania and Libya.
"The city of Murcia has one of the most beautiful palm groves in southeastern Spain, such as Santiago and Zaraiche, an enclave that is a landmark not only in terms of landscape, but also heritage, as it retains the unique traditional irrigation system that is It has remained intact since the time of the Arabs until our days, one of the exponents of the network of acequias and azarbes with more than 12 centuries of antiquity that give life to the Huerta de Murcia ".

Knowing what we were allows us to know much more about who we are, "said the mayor of Murcia, who stressed that" through the Plan of Action of the Huerta de Murcia we are recovering and putting in value the emblematic heritage elements of this unique environment in Europe "
The municipality of Murcia has more than 15,000 palm trees in public environments.
In addition to the palm groves of Santiago and Zaraiche, the municipality has the La Paz palm grove and gardens and parks where this species occupies a leading role, such as the Viudes Garden of the Carmen neighborhood or the Alameda del Malecón, the new green lung of 'Murcia River', which will open soon to all Murcia.
The 'green revolution' of Al-Andalus
The palm groves of the Spanish southeast form a landscape unit that covers the south of the province of Alicante, Murcia and Almeria.
These palm trees have a value that surpasses the mere landscape conditions.
Located on the old commercial route of Sahok Al-Andalus, they are the living testimony of the agricultural revolution known as the 'green revolution', which took place in Al-Andalus.
It is, in short, the transfer of a typical landscape from one culture to another, from one continent to another, from North Africa to Europe;
a natural value that, throughout history, has been the subject of beautiful literary creations.
The Route of the Palm Trees of the Southeast and North of Africa will contribute to the preservation of this legacy and covers the provinces of Alicante (Alicante, Elche, San Isidro, Orihuela), Murcia (Santiago and Zaraiche and also the municipalities of Valle de Ricote and Abanilla ) and Almería (Pechina), along with others from North African countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, Libya, Egypt).
