On Wednesday, the University of Murcia signed two agreements with Azul en Acción, a non-profit organization that has been developing cooperation projects related to visual health since 2007, mainly in African and Indian countries.
The first of these agreements is aimed at Azul en Acción being able to receive volunteering from the university community, and the second one establishes a collaboration with the Faculty of Optics and Optometry to work on the improvement of visual health in developing countries.
Specifically, the faculty will provide optical material so that the organization can use it in their projects.
In addition, their teachers and students will devote their time to assemble and restore donated glasses that the association receives, and that distributes in their travels of cooperation, which may also attend university volunteers.
María Cristina Sánchez, Vice Chancellor of Students, explained that the signing of these agreements will allow university volunteers to collaborate in development cooperation campaigns and visual health programs, participating in the activities of Azul en Acción.
"We want to promote, activate and launch new actions and ways of collaboration that continue to strengthen the social fabric and solidarity of the University of Murcia," he said.
On the other hand, Eloy Ángel Villegas, dean of the Faculty of Optics and Optometry, stressed that "for the faculty, the signing of these agreements is very important because they will allow collaboration with Azul en Acción, helping in the generation of material resources as in the transfer of knowledge ".
He added that this center has shown for years a great sensitivity for programs of collaboration with people in need and shows that in the 2010 curriculum, an optional subject called 'Optometry and cooperation in the third world' was included. , whose teacher is Professor Esther Berrio.
Professor Berrio explained that more than 180 million people have vision problems in the world, but that more than 80% are easily avoidable thanks to simple glasses of myopia or presbyopia, or small surgical interventions.
Precisely, in this line, the cooperation of the faculty with associations such as Azul en Acción makes sense.
The president of Azul en Acción, Jesús Franco Vicente, has shown satisfaction with the signing of agreements that will allow university participation in their projects, in which they have been working for more than 20 years to bring solidarity to the most disadvantaged groups.
The ceremony was closed by the rector, José Luján, who congratulated the faculty of Optics and Optometry for bringing to their curricula subjects that promote commitment to the third world.
And, finally, he stressed that the University of Murcia was the university with the largest number of volunteers in 2018;
specifically with the figure of 2428.
