Murcia boasts in FITUR of the six centuries of history of its Holy Week and expects to exceed 97% of hotel occupancy (23/01/2019)

In 2018, tourism in the municipality reached its highest peak of hotel occupancy during Holy Week, with records of 97.05% occupancy on Good Friday and 93.61% on Holy Saturday.

José Ballesta: "The more than 20,000 members of the 15 Brotherhoods of Murcia are preparing a Holy Week that will go down in history and in which Murcia will shine."

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesús Pacheco, and the president of the Cabildo Superior de Cofradías, Ramón Sánchez-Parra, presented today at FITUR the new tourist brand of the Holy Week of Murcia;

an event of International Tourist Interest, which last year reached peak occupancy of 97% in Murcia hotels.

"Our Holy Week has more than six centuries of tradition - it is one of the oldest in Spain - but if there is something alive, that it is renewed year and generates new passions, it is the people who make it possible.

The more than 20,000 members of the 15 Brotherhoods of Murcia - the largest number of Nazarenes in our region - are preparing a Holy Week that will go down in history.

Emotion will travel our streets and passion will be the protagonist of a few days in which Murcia shines, "said José Ballesta.

In 2018, tourism in the municipality reached its highest peak of hotel occupancy during Holy Week, with records of 97.05% occupancy on Good Friday and 93.61% on Holy Saturday.

Last year, the average occupation during the entire Holy Week, from Friday of Dolores until Easter Sunday exceeded 67.5% and the average price exceeded 9.6% to that registered in 2017.

"This year we hope to overcome these positive figures for the sector, since, in addition, time will be with us, since Holy Week will be held in the spring, from April 12 to 21," the mayor explained.

With regard to tourism in the whole of the year in the municipality of Murcia, the total number of travelers has shot up 30.83% in 2018 compared to 2015 and overnight stays have increased in these three years by 35.75%, surpassing for the first time in the history of the municipality the barrier of 780,000.

Murcia, a city with Angel

The presentation of the new tourist brand of Holy Week, under the slogan 'Murcia, a city with Angel', is the actions of the tourism promotion campaign of the municipality of Murcia in FITUR, along with the audiovisual production 'A Murcia se returns' and the magazine 'Tourism of Murcia'.

"The Cabildo Superior de Cofradías has wanted to give a new air to its image of tourism promotion, but remaining faithful to its essence, with a reinterpretation of the Angel of Prayer of Huerto de Salzillo, made by the designer José Luis Montero."

This Saturday will take place in Murcia the official presentation of the Town Manager, Teodoro Garcia, and the poster of Holy Week, which this 2019 will also incorporate new features, such as the geolocation of the different thrones, which will allow to know their position since they leave until they enter.

The mayor of Murcia, together with the mayors of Cartagena and Lorca, -the three cities of the Region whose Holy Weeks have been declared of International Tourist Interest- also attended the presentation of 'Murcia Sacra', by the Minister of Tourism and Culture, Miriam Guardiola, and the presidents of the Cabildos and Cofradías.

Agreement with Renfe

José Ballesta will sign within the framework of FITUR, together with the president of Renfe, Isaías Táboas, the agreement for the tourist promotion of the municipality of Murcia through the rail services, which establishes discounts on the price of the ticket, lowering its cost to those tourists They arrive in the city by train.

"This is the renewal of an agreement in which Renfe will offer a series of benefits to all passengers with origin and destination in the city of Murcia using the rail services.

It is aimed at both specific sectors -in the case of congress tourism- and family or group trips that have their origin and destination in the city of Murcia, "said the mayor in Fitur today.
