The Regional Federation of Hospitality and Tourism Businessmen (Hostemur) has requested that the hospitality industry not be used as a political throwing weapon, after the controversy raised around the terraces of the squares of San Juan and Cristo del Rescate, and of San José Street of Murcia.
And it is that the municipal group Now Murcia has urged the City Council to show the authorizations of the Ministry of Culture for these sites, "terraces that have in that area with a special measure duly reflected in the municipal plan of land use planning. spaces and singular spaces of Murcia and approved in 2013, "says Jesús Jiménez, president of Hostemur.
"We believe that you can not use any reason to create controversy in politics and grab headlines in the media, especially when they can affect the bread of many families," criticizes Jiménez, who recalls that the regulation of these terraces - which have not been increased in recent years - is part of the annex to the ordinance regulating the occupation of public roads with terraces and other facilities in Murcia.
"Tourism and hospitality are the main engine of the economy of the municipality and that is why we demand that we be treated with respect, and not be used as a cheap argument without foundation to climb political posts within a party," he adds.
Value of the hotel business
In addition, the president of Hostemur wanted to emphasize that without the hospitality and tourism these places and those areas would become marginal and insecure, "as they were before the installation of these terraces."
From the employers stress that these businesses add value to these areas and highlight that there are destinations with BIC squares with terraces in the rest of Europe, such as the squares of San Marcos in Venice, the Duomo in Florence, the city hall in Tallinn or the of the market in Krakow, or in Spain, such as the Plaza Mayor in Madrid or the Cathedral of Granada.
From Hostemur also remember that when it has been necessary the intervention of emergency teams in these areas have done so without any problem, with the collaboration of the innkeepers.
"Playing the strategy of 'if the river sounds' and creating a non-existent fear is irresponsible and can unnecessarily harm many people," criticizes Jiménez, who asks that the "political demagogy of balance" be abandoned.
