The City of Murcia created the Tourist Police unit last September with the priority mission of bringing the police service to foreigners who visit the city in their own language.
The unit is composed of one corporal and ten agents, all of them proficient in the English language, and some of them accredit another second language, such as Italian, German and French, in some cases having been born or residing in those countries.
In addition to knowing other languages to communicate with visitors, the agents also have knowledge about the historical and cultural heritage of Murcia, its museums and monuments.
Thus, a few days ago, the members of this unit made the usual itinerary made by tourists, accompanied by an official guide, who showed them the places that most interest awaken among those who discover Murcia for the first time.
Along with the guide, attended by the councilors of Traffic, Security and Citizen Protection, Lola Sanchez, and Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesus Pacheco, in addition to the Chief Inspector of Police, José María Mainar.
The Tourist Police unit provides a service with greater presence in the morning, midday and early afternoon hours, coinciding with the times of greatest influx of tourists.
The most frequent locations where the agents are located are Glorieta, Plaza Belluga, Trapería, Platería, Santo Domingo and Romea squares and, in general, those places where there is the most influx of visitors.
In addition, agents regularly visit the motorhome area next to the Thader shopping center, where the police presence is greatly appreciated by both national and foreign tourists.
Agents are also assigned to services on the occasion of the celebration in the city of congresses or international meetings on different subjects and specialties where assistants or speakers of a diversity of nationalities can attend.
Likewise, the police unit attends mass events and parties in which the presence of foreigners is significant.
This is the case of the September Fair, Huertos del Malecon, Romería de la Virgen de la Fuensanta, Bando de la Huerta, Burial of the Sardine, etc.
