The coordination between the City Council and Jesus Abandoned allowed serving 53 people during the warning due to low temperatures (15/01/2019)

Of these, ten agreed to be transferred to the reception center, while the others received hot drinks, warm clothes, blankets and sleeping bags.

Conchita Ruiz emphasizes that "our objective was that no person should be forced to sleep in the open and the joint deployment we have made has guaranteed that this was the case".

Fifty-three people have been treated in the street by the Mobile Emergency Service Social Care (SEMAS) of the City of Murcia and Jesus Abandoned in the framework of "Cold Operation" launched by the Department of Social Rights and Cooperation Development and the Foundation with the aim of reinforcing the usual device of attention to people.

Of these, ten agreed to be transferred to the reception center, while all others received drinks and hot meals, clothing, blankets and sleeping bags.

The City Council -with the intervention of the SEMAS and the Local Police- and Jesus Abandoned set up a specific device for the cold days, especially on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, which meant a reinforcement of the work they have been doing since beginning of winter between the two entities.

It has been carried out with street routes, through the social workers of Jesus Abandoned and the team of the Mobile Emergency Service and Social Care (SEMAS), which provided warm kits and hot drinks to people who were in the Street.

Also the Local Police vehicles carried blankets in their vehicles.

The purpose of the device was to guide and inform of the possibility of resorting to the resources that the City Council provides them, whether in Jesus Abandoned or in pensions.

"Our goal," Councilwoman Conchita Ruiz explains, "was that no one should be forced to sleep in the open and the joint deployment we have made has guaranteed that this is the case."

Although this work is developed throughout the year, it is reinforced especially in episodes of extreme temperatures, either by heat or cold.

On these occasions, the coordination maintained throughout the year by both institutions is also intensified to be prepared in case there are more people willing to go to the shelter to escape the cold.

Social workers walk the streets, gardens, ATMs, etc.

giving help to people who sleep on public roads.

In this cold wave, the tour has been made throughout the city, especially the downtown area, Gran Vía, Santa María de Gracia, Juan de Borbón, Abenarabi, Santa Teresa Street, San Antolín, San Antón, San Andrés, bus station, street and Floridablanca Garden, Cartagena Street, Circular Square, Ronda Norte, Teniente Flomesta Avenue, Glorieta, Garden of Fame, Santa Isabel Square, Cathedral Area, Juan Manuel Infante Quarter and Malecón.

The Mobile Emergency Service and Social Care (SEMAS), under the Department of Social Rights and Development Cooperation, makes regular outings to serve the homeless.

In addition to their ordinary planning, they walk the streets of the city on nights when the thermometer drops by 5 degrees.

In their itinerary, they offer guidance and information to all so that they know the resources at their disposal to avoid spending the nights in the open.
