According to data from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, 6.5% of PM10 particles have traffic as their source of emission.
Only 8 Spanish capitals have a protocol that includes the measures that will be adopted in case surpasses are detected and articulates communication channels to transfer all the information to the population.
The permitted emission limit of 50 μg / m3 of PM10 was exceeded in 2018 in Murcia by 14 days, far from the 35 times a year established in the regulations.
In fact, last year was the second year with the highest air quality in relation to the PM10 since 2009, with an average of 29.97 μg / m³, when the limit is 50. 85% of the occasions in which The concentration of these particles was recorded between November and February, since this phenomenon is closely related to the weather situation in the cold months, with low temperatures and absence of rain and wind.
The City of Murcia has been a pioneer in the Region in launching a transparency and information protocol on air quality.
In fact, it is the only municipality that has a protocol of these characteristics, and one of the few in Spain, where less than a dozen capitals have this document.
The protocol of Murcia includes the measures that at municipal level will be adopted in case of detection of exceedances of acceptable levels.
It is a local tool aimed at protecting the population, reducing air pollution in situations where the information and warning thresholds regulated by state regulations are exceeded.
In addition, it proposes generic measures to be carried out by the population for the sake of better air quality in the municipality.
In addition to approving this document, the City Council has adopted numerous measures, not only with the activation of the different phases of the protocol, but also others aimed at promoting the transformation of Murcia into a sustainable city from the environmental point of view.
Among them, highlights the creation of a network of urban bike lanes, the pedestrianization of Alfonso X, the green trail of the South Mountain Range or the commitment to electric mobility are some examples given in recent years to improve air quality.
Tranquil message
The spokesperson of the Government Team, Rebeca Pérez, has transmitted a message of tranquility to all Murcia, because in the City we are pending changes that occur and neighbors have access to information in real time because in this matter, as in all, transparency is the key. '
The sources of emission of these particles, according to the Ministry's data, can be mobile or stationary, highlighting that 77.9% of the total amount emitted of PM10 comes from the resuspended dust existing in the atmosphere.
Industry, construction and commerce, with 7.6%, and road transport, with 6.5%, represent other sources of contamination of special relevance.
As minority sources, the Ministry details that 3.7% of the total comes from agricultural burning and 3.3% is of domestic origin.
