The University of Murcia is the second university with the most students with disabilities in its classrooms (28/12/2018)

The University of Murcia is consolidated as one of the Spanish university centers with the greatest commitment to the inclusion of students with disabilities in their classrooms, according to the Guide to Disability Care Guide 2018, edited by the Universia Foundation.

The guide developed by Universia indicates that in Spanish universities a total of 22,190 people with disabilities are studying, which is a historical maximum since this document began to be prepared in 2008. At the University of Murcia, 839 of them are studied, a figure that places the institution as the second Spanish university with the largest number of students with disabilities, only surpassed in absolute figures by the University of Valencia.

The report prepared by the Universia Foundation also focuses on the services offered by each of the educational centers to favor the inclusion of their students.

In total, the guide analyzes 18 points including curricular adaptations, the existence of scholarships and grants, specific volunteer programs and the adaptation of academic materials, among other issues.

Of the eighteen points, the University of Murcia is seventeen, a record that only five other universities in the country match or exceed.

The University of Murcia has a long career in the field of diversity, a work carried out through the Service of Attention to Diversity and Volunteering, under the Vice-rectorate of Students.

In relative data, the UMU is the Spanish university with the highest ratio of students with disabilities in its classrooms, with approximately 2.7% of the total number of people enrolled, according to the latest data available.

The institution was one of the first universities to introduce free tuition for students with disabilities when it was not required by law.

In the same way, the UMU was a pioneer (since 1994) in having a service of attention to the disability with which to cover needs and demands in the day to day academic of this group.

The measures of attention to diversity at the University of Murcia are articulated through individual orientation actions to students, reports of curricular adaptations and individualized support recommendations, management and availability of resources (technical support, volunteering, etc.) as well as transversal actions for the promotion of equal opportunities of the collective (training courses, awareness days, etc).

Through the Service of Attention to Diversity and Volunteering support is provided to students with disabilities, as well as those educational support needs that so request.

The University of Murcia works day by day for a more diverse university community and with equal opportunities.
