The Regional Assembly investigates the poor state of the castles of Murcia after the request of Huermur (28/12/2018)

Huermur has brought to the attention of this Commission a comprehensive report on the state of conservation of the castles declared of Cultural Interest in Murcia, submitting a dossier with cards, photographs, and information on their status, protection and more serious conditions in this historical heritage

The Commission of the Regional Assembly has requested detailed information to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture on these historic buildings, as well as on the budget items that the Ministry devotes to these goods

Huermur has also requested that appropriate initiatives be undertaken from the Regional Assembly to create a figure, program or regional action to enhance, recover, rehabilitate and access all eleven buildings that form the medieval defensive system

The Association for the Conservation of the Garden and the Heritage of Murcia (Huermur) has achieved that the Committee of Petitions and Defense of the Citizen of the Regional Assembly to initiate an investigation for the poor state of conservation of the eleven medieval castles of Murcia and its garden , among which we can find the Castle of Monteagudo, the Castillejo, the Castle of Light, the castles of the Port of the Chain, the Asomada, Larache, Cabezo de Torres, the Castle of Los Garres, Tabala or the Cabezo del Moro in the district of Cañadas de San Pedro, for example.

It has also been reported about the poor condition of the two large pools or huts of Monteagudo and Larache, strongly linked to their castles in the garden of Murcia.

Huermur remarks that all these castles and buildings boast the highest category of protection granted by the Cultural Heritage Act, to be considered as cultural interest (BIC), so that conservation obligations are maximum and mandatory by local regulations, as regional and state.

But in all these cases, they point out from Huermur, the mandates that the legislation establishes for their effective conservation and protection, both of the castles themselves and in their corresponding BIC protection environments, would not be being fulfilled.

In the petition sent to the Commission, Huermur sent numerous documents of interest, as well as a complete dossier of the current status of each of the eleven defensive buildings, requesting that the necessary actions and steps be taken to urge the Government Regional, its relevant councils and their managers carry out urgently and without further delay the appropriate actions to prevent the ruin and degradation of all eleven castles and buildings BIC, given the worrying state of some of them, and prevent any damage, deterioration or impairment of these protected monuments, and their protective environments.

In the same sense, Huermur has urged that appropriate initiatives be undertaken from the Regional Assembly to create a figure, program and / or regional action of enhancement, recovery, rehabilitation and accessibility of all eleven buildings that make up the system defensive medieval, and whose values are more than demonstrated to be each and every one of them BIC.

In line with the above, the President of Huermur, Sergio Pacheco, wonders how it has been possible that this rich heritage protected from all Murcia and that is configured as an undeniable witness of the past of our land, has reached the limit situation of collapse in which it is, with numerous buildings plagued by weeds, painted, cracks, landslides, garbage, and a long etcetera, which in addition to presuming an alleged violation of current legislation on cultural heritage, is a bad image for the tourism that visits us.

Huermur also adds that the state in which this medieval heritage is located, means that our Region is losing a unique opportunity to value these assets, and thus create an economic, tourist and social engine of undeniable value, and that would be a before and afterwards in the sad history of the conservation of the historical and cultural heritage of the huerta of Murcia.

Huermur puts as an example municipalities in this region, such as Cartagena, where they have shown that the change towards a wealth management model that is really willing to put in value the large amount of assets we have, can have a very significant and positive impact in the economic, tourist and social sector of the Region of Murcia, and in each municipality.

Finally, Huermur has published on its website an interactive map with the locations of the eleven defensive buildings, photographs and a summary of its state of conservation, protection and urgent measures to be carried out, as well as a detailed file of each of the Murcia castles.
