The Museum of La Sangre opens its doors in the heart of the Carmen neighborhood (23/12/2018)

José Ballesta: "The layout of the works, which treasure the 600 years of history of this Brotherhood, which is the third oldest in Spain, allows the visitor to walk among the carvings and look them in the eye."

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the president of the Autonomous Community, Fernando López Miras, open this afternoon the Museo Cristo de la Sangre, which opens its doors in the heart of the Carmen neighborhood, next to the church.

The act will have the presence of the Councilor for Education, Relations with Universities and Heritage, Rafael Gomez, and the mayor responsible for Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesus Pacheco, as well as numerous members of the Archconfraternity of Blood and neighborhood residents .

In total, the Museum has 600m2 for the exhibition of images, and it is also conceived as a valuable instrument destined to revitalize the cultural life of the Carmen neighborhood, integrated as an open, dynamic and versatile space;

with three large rooms, a gallery of cultural exhibitions, a store and a multipurpose space.

"The disposition of the works allows the visitor to walk among them and look them in the eyes.

This new Museum is a tourist and cultural resource of first level that is united to the historical patrimony of the city of Murcia, with works of master sculptors like Nicolás de Bussy, Roque López, González Moreno or Campillo ", highlighted José Ballesta, who added that "These sculptures can, as of today, be seen in the neighborhood of Carmen, in the historic building adjacent to the Chapel of the Christ of the Blood, which has been restored while retaining the original architectural features and richness of this property by Pedro Cerdán".

The Museum, which has opened its doors on the ground floor of former Colegio Nuestra Señora del Carmen and, previously, headquarters of the University of Murcia, houses the important set of images owned by the Archconfraternity of the Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ , popularly known as 'Los Coloraos'.

600 years of history

The new museum space shows all the heritage of the six-hundred-year-old Archicofradía, founded on April 11, 1411, the oldest brotherhood of Murcia and the third in Spain, with works by image makers such as Nicolás de Bussy, Roque López, Dorado Brisa, González Moreno, Hernández Navarro, Campillo, etc.

A visit to the Museum

Room I houses six works: 'Ángel niño', carved in 1693 by Nicolás de Bussy;

'Bust of Ecce Homo', late seventeenth of Bussy;

'The Negation, the image of dress of San Pedro, carved by de Bussy (1689);

'The Praetorium', only the image of Jesus is original of Bussy (1695), the rest was destroyed in the Civil War;

'La Samaritana', work of Roque López of 1799;

'La Dolorosa', Roque López, 1787.

Room II also exhibits six steps: 'La Soledad', by Antonio Campillo, 1985;

'Christ of Love in the Conversation of the Good Thief', José Antonio Hernández Navarro, 2011;

'San Juan', by the sculptor Juan Dorado, 1905;

'Jesus of the Redemption', Antonio Jesús Yuste Navarro, 2017;

'Cristo de las Penas', Hernández Navarro, 1986;

'Jesus in the house of Lázaro', Hernández Navarro, 1985.

Room III includes the scene 'The Daughters of Jerusalem', Juan González Moreno, 1956;

and 'El Lavatorio', the masterpiece by GonzálezMoreno, 1952. The chapel of the old portería of the convent of the Carmelites, right next to the Museum, houses the spectacular suspended image of the 'Santísimo Cristo de la Sangre', the work of Nicolás de Bussy , 1693.
