The University of Murcia hosts the II Conference on the Rights of Children in the Hemicycle of Letters (11/12/2018)

The University of Murcia has hosted on Tuesday the II Conference on the Rights of Children, which took place in the Hemicycle of the Faculty of Arts.

The conference was attended by Violante Tomás, counselor of Family and Equality of Opportunities of the CARM;

Rosa Peñalver, president of the Regional Assembly of Murcia;

Adolfo Lacuesta, president of the Platform of Organizations of Infancy (POI) in Spain;

and Juana López, president of this platform in the Region of Murcia.

Juana López Calero, president of the POI-RM, has ensured that "childhood and its problems are increasingly visible in the political discourse and in the media" but lamented that "this reality has been changing more because of the worsening of the living conditions of children, which has become the most vulnerable population in the Region of Murcia, and not so much because of the existence of a greater sensitivity to their own problems ".

According to the president of the POI-RM, "the high rates of child poverty, failure and school dropout, the absence of adequate public investment and the lack of equity of education are a constant in our society, but it has been after the economic crisis when these worrying situations have become an emergency and have reached alarming levels ".

That is why, from this platform, it is considered "urgent to go from words to deeds and place children at the center of policies", he pointed out.

For this, "it is necessary to guarantee that the children of the Region of Murcia are present in the laws, programs, plans and budgets, taking them into account and making effective the principle of higher interest, contemplated in the Convention on children's rights".

During the development of the Conference, a round table was held featuring representatives of the different political parties that appear in the upcoming municipal elections.

Specifically, they have been part of it:

Miriam Pérez Albaladejo.

Popular Party of the Region of Murcia

Emilio Ivars Ferrer.

PSOE Region of Murcia

Antonio Sánchez Lorente.

Citizens of the Region of Murcia

José Luis Álvarez Castellanos.

Izquierda Unida-Verdes Region of Murcia

José María Ruiz Ortega.

We are Region

María Marín Martínez

We can Murcia Region

During the debate, numerous issues related to Children and the policies developed to alleviate those aspects that affect them most have come up.

In this sense, 39% of children in the Region of Murcia live at risk of poverty or social exclusion;

and the levels of failure and school dropout are located at 26.4%, ranking among the highest in Europe.

In addition, economic segregation is causing the proliferation of what are known as "ghetto schools", of which 9 out of 10 are publicly owned.

On the other hand, data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) predict that, within a decade, our country will have lost 2.6 million inhabitants and will have almost one million fewer children under 10 years.

In this social context, the Platform of Organizations of the Infancy of the Region of Murcia is marked as fundamental objectives to promote policies aimed at increasing the well-being of children in the Region of Murcia, to monitor and denounce those situations that violate their rights, develop awareness campaigns for the knowledge and respect of these rights and promote the participation and association of children, developing dialogue, collaboration and participation on the rights of this vulnerable group.
