Especially vulnerable groups (children and women), European politics, different national responses or the media treatment of migrations will be some of the topics that will be analyzed in the Campus of Los Jerónimos from tomorrow, Wednesday until Friday, in the framework of the IV International Congress of the Innocent III Chair
Under the theme "Migrants and refugees in the law, historical evolution, current situation and unresolved issues", almost 100 professors from 80 universities around the world will meet at the UCAM from December 12 to 14, at the IV Congress of the Innocent III International Chair, with the aim of carrying out a global and interdisciplinary reflection on the migratory phenomenon and the situation of refugees, dealing with a wide spectrum of historical themes and moments, from ancient Rome to the current crisis.
The objective of the Congress, in the words of its director, Javier Belda Iniesta "far from being a simple sample of historical-juridical scholarship, is to show the question of migrations and refugees, not only as a cause of social emergency or international risk to all the levels- but also as an opportunity for global wealth, cultural growth and meeting among the peoples, highlighting the evident failure of current international policies ".
To this end, the inaugural Conference, which will be dictated by Bishop Roberth Vitillo, Secretary General of the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC), will be followed, for three days, by 100 lectures given in English, French, Italian and Spanish by professors from the USA, United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Poland, Greece, Qatar, India, Uzbekistan, China or the Holy See, among others.
Thus, starting from a historical reflection that serves to configure an evolutionary framework that reaches the current situation, the conferences start with the situation of migration flows, refugees and asylum rights from the ancient world to the modern era, in which the debate will focus on more current issues, such as refugee status, differentiation with the migratory phenomenon or the right of asylum, or its relationship with religion, economics, international politics or human rights.
A key point will be especially vulnerable groups, such as the relationship between women and immigration - from the status of Muslim women in Europe to the issue of mutilation - the relationship between immigration and disability or the legal status of children and unaccompanied minors .
The legal status of the gypsies or of the people displaced by internal violence (such as the Colombian or Venezuelan cases) will also be studied in this scientific meeting.
At European level, for example, the Sustainable Development Goals will be discussed as a mitigating factor for African migration;
the relation of the migratory crisis with the emergence of liquid borders and the possible emptying of the concept of Nation;
the failed common immigration policy in the European Union or the community response to the challenge of the new "refugees", that is, the displaced environmental or economic.
Likewise, the most thorny legal issues will also be addressed, such as hot returns, extradition, the labor situation of migrants in Italy today.
In fact, the different national response will also be an important part of the topics to be discussed during the congress, both in Spain (studying the participation of immigrants at the municipal level, immigration between citizenship rules and the principle of social inclusion or the economic or criminal impact in our country) as the past and present situation of the phenomenon in other nations, such as the case of the medieval pilgrims or the Negroes prize of South Africa in the 19th century, as well as the current migratory discourse in the United States, Israel, the former USSR, China or the Middle East among others.
Finally, the reflection will focus on the social repercussion of the migration issue and the humanitarian emergency, augmented in recent years by the greater coverage of this reality.
To do this, we will talk about the media discourse of migrations or the recent case of Aquarius, to conclude the closing conference of Professor Joaquín Arango Vila-Belda, director of Migration and Citizenship Studies Center, entitled "Immigration and Asylum in turbulent times ".
