The University of Murcia celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Fulbright scholarships with a reception (30/11/2018)

The University of Murcia has celebrated this Friday a day dedicated to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Fulbright scholarships in Spain and highlight the collaboration between the institution and this program of academic excellence that gives the opportunity to Spanish researchers to train in the United States and vice versa.

The rector of the University of Murcia has received in the early morning in his office those responsible for the Fulbright Commission in Spain and Stewart Tuttle, Public Diplomacy Advisor of the US Embassy, with whom he has held a meeting.

Subsequently, a reception has been made to Fulbright scholars and scholars of the University of Murcia.

Currently, two professors work at the UMU, who will spend three months collaborating on research projects and teaching classes;

and a pre-doctoral student at the University of Hawaii, Kristin Rock, who has a scholarship to research during this academic year in the Department of English Philology.

In addition, the two graduates from the University of Murcia have also been present. The next academic year will enjoy an academic stay in the United States thanks to this program.

These are Irene Martínez Morata, a graduate in Medicine, and Pablo Rodríguez Ros, a graduate in Environmental Sciences.

Irene Martínez finished her medical studies in June and, having completed her stays abroad thanks to the Erasmus and Erasmus Mundus program, and in her last year enjoying a degree in a grant from the World Health Organization, she clearly understood directing his career to research in the field of public health, especially in the impact that the environment has on the development of diseases and public health.

"My TFG director proposed me to try to do the project to present myself to the Fulbright scholarships knowing that it was a very small possibility to get the scholarship and I was encouraged, and I am very happy because in Spain this field of research is not so powerful and is a great opportunity, "Irene explained after the reception.

Thanks to her scholarship she will be able to study a two-year master's degree at one of the largest American universities.

At this time he manages his admission with Harvard, Columbia, Berckley and Washington.

Pablo Rodríguez Ros, graduated in Environmental Sciences from the University of Murcia in 2013, has obtained a predoctoral fellowship that will allow him to develop a research project as part of his doctoral thesis, which he develops at the Institute of Marine Sciences of Barcelona.

This project will take you to the University of California San Diego where you will develop mathematical models to record the diversity of marine ocean phytoplankton globally.

His research is aimed at investigating gases other than carbon dioxide that influence climate regulation and, therefore, may have an influence on climate change.

These works have led him to participate in missions of oceanographic vessels through Antarctica, one of them with the Expérides.

Pablo points out that "achieving the Fulbright scholarship on a personal level is a great hope for working in the United States and, at a professional level, it offers me the possibility of doing a project that I could not develop anywhere else."

The Fulbright program awards each year between 20 and 25 scholarships to Spanish graduates and the fact that two graduates from the University of Murcia receive one is a very high success rate, as recognized by Alberto López San Miguel, Executive Director Fulbright Commission .

Stewart Tuttle, advisor of Public Diplomacy of the US Embassy, has placed special emphasis on the fact that this type of programs and scholarships have an added value that connects people and institutions over time and "their role in the relationship of countries in the long term is much more important than what we politicians can have. "

The Rector Luján has congratulated all the people who have enjoyed or will enjoy a scholarship and has made clear the commitment of the University of Murcia to continue collaborating with the Fulbright Commission as one of the institution's international mobility objectives.
