Infrastructure recovers some archaeological remains that belonged to the old convent of Santo Domingo (30/11/2018)

The Regional Archaeological Archive is the place chosen to conserve the oven, found

during the pedestrianization of Avenida Alfonso X el Sabio

In the section from Santo Domingo to Jaime I El Conquistador have been discovered archaeological remains of the XV - XVII centuries

"The actions that have been carried out are carried out by archaeologists and supervised by technicians so that they are kept in perfect condition, avoiding any type of wear or degradation of the structures, adopting the necessary measures for their conservation" said Rebeca Pérez

Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Perez delivers a furnace, discovered in Avenida Alfonso X on the occasion of the pedestrianization works being carried out, to the Regional Archaeological Archive.

This piece of great patrimonial importance has been found in an excavation in Avenida Alfonso X where underground containers were going to be located, specifically in section 1: in the axis of Santo Domingo - Jaime I El Conquistador.

In this area a series of archaeological remains with modern chronology (XV-XVII centuries), which belonged to the old convent of Santo Domingo, have been discovered.

An oven and a ceramic floor, which was a passage area for cars or vehicles

The furnace is a structure of adobe bricks that in the center contains a shallow well, with concretions of copper and bronze.

Between the structures of walls a floor of bricks put to sardinel in vertical has been found and spike that is not in very good state, since it could be a floor of patio or zone of step of cars or vehicles.

Below is documented the remains of another older pavement, belonging to the remains of the convent.

"The actions that have been carried out are carried out by archaeologists and supervised by technicians so that they are kept in perfect conditions, avoiding any type of wear or degradation of the structures, adopting the necessary measures for their conservation," said Rebeca Pérez.

Archaeologists and restorers have carried out consolidation and conservation work

For this, a methodology of cleaning surfaces, with a brush, manually, and a protection methodology, installing a geotextile sheet has been carried out.

A double layer of geotextile has been laid on the brick floor, placed perpendicularly, and a level gravel layer without stones has been placed on the sheet.

A consolidation methodology has also been applied, to give firmness to the adobes that form the kiln, proceeding to the consolidation with lime and acrylic product by means of injection.

The furnace has been extracted by means of swords of extraction and next, it has been encapsulated and transported in an armor made with rods of glass fiber, creating a shell of expanded polyurethane that protects it.

The next actions that will be developed in this piece are to seal the fissures and cracks, and to impregnate all the surfaces until the saturation.

These extraction works have lasted 5 days.
